Hi all. Just received this. The Lovely Dining Companion and I have been supporters of the Tibetan Alliance for a number of years (we actually met in Tibet, remarkably enough) and we have attended this event in the past. There is a surprisingly large Tibetan community in Chicago and this event is a lot of fun. And the food is largely homemade. It's a wonderful window into an ethnic community we don't get much exposure to (especially since the one Tibetan place in town closed about five years ago). (If you have questions about the event or the food, feel free to PM me.)

"Dear friends and supporters of the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago:

Although Losar (Year of the Male Iron Tiger 2137) falls on February 14, 2010 , the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago is hosting an event filled with traditional Tibetan dance, music and food for our American friends and supporters on February 20, 2010 (Saturday) at 6:00 pm at the Tibetan community center.

Location: 2422 Dempster Street, Evanston , IL.
    Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm .
Suggested donation: $15.00 at the door

    (Dinner included)"

    Hi,

I will absolutely positively go next year. I will be elsewhere having a cultural adventure, too.

    Regards,

Important announcement for anyone who is planning to attend. I just received an e-mail this morning about the event:

"Dear friends and supporters of the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago:

We have received an urgent directive from Tibetan Government in Exile, Dharamsala, urging every Tibetan organization not to celebrate Losar this year because of the situation in Tibet. Accordingly, we regret to inform you that we have to make some changes to the February 20, 2010 Program emailed to you earlier.

The Losar celebration is cancelled, as there would be signs of festivity associated with Losar on February 20, 2010. In other words, there will be no usual Tibetan traditional dances and songs. Instead, we will hold this event as “Friends and Supporters of Tibetan Alliance Appreciation Night”. We will do a video screening of "Educating the Heart" talk given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Madison, Wisconsin (May 2008)."

The e-mail goes on but this was the pertinent part. After re-reading the e-mail, it seems clear that there WILL still be dinner that evening. But for those looking forward to the cultural portion of the evening, that has been cancelled. I'm sorry. We'll have to hope for positive developments from the region and look forward to celebrating with song and dance next year.
