It's bouillabaisse "season" at Le Titi de Paris. Great stuff, made even more wonderful by stirring rouille into the saffron broth. What a meal. I went with four friends, and all were as blissed out as I was.

If you hope to go, check the website, as it's not served every night, even when it's "in season." http://www.letitideparis.com/

I just came back from a weekend jaunt to Minneapolis and checked out James Beard nominated chef Isaac Becker's latest dining destination, Bar La Grassa. Loved it so much went two nights in a row (over a short weekend trip too!) and had a beautiful, textured lobster and scrambled egg bruschetta both nights.

I wanted something relatively healthy for lunch today and realized TTOWA was near a stop I needed to make. I can't do dumplings, but thankfully they had bulgogi, a dish I never tried before but am glad I did. It's bursting with flavor and the smell had me drooling all the way back to the office. They replaced the rice with veggies as requested, but they put some purple rice in a container separately, along with what I assume is kimchee, bean sprouts, "potato salad," and something else I haven't opened yet because it's leaked out of the container into the little bag it's wrapped in—this will be a dinner adventure. I couldn't even finish the beef because the portion is freakin' huge, so this $11 lunch will certainly stretch for 2 or 3 meals.

Chicken Liver po'boy at Mahoney's in New Orleans: deep fried livers, mineral-ly to the core, matched only with a cabbage slaw heavy on the vinegar and mustard seed. GENIUS.

A couple of weeks ago, I had dinner at Vivere, the nice ground-floor restaurant in the Italian Village complex in the Loop. My main course was roast breast of duck, and I'm still thinking about it. Somehow, they managed to cook it so that it was uniformly pink throughout the entire breast, rather than the typical way in which it's gray on the outside, and red (usually dark red) in the middle. Maybe they cooked it sous vide? Anyway, it was AMAZINGLY tender; in fact, the texture reminded me of the wagyu beef in one of the courses at Alinea. Just melt-in-your-mouth good. And it was a very nice portion size, too.

Yam khaw muu yaang kap taeng kwaa—Grilled pork neck in a salad with cucumbers at Spoon Thai. Pork was tender and tasty. The dressing that comes on this salad is the perfect mix of hot, tart, sweet and fresh. Sadly, there was no bread to sop up the little pool of it that was left in the bottom of the plate.

Atop the many highlights of a celebratory dinner, the medai with ume, sudachi, and fried garlic chip as part of the tasting menu at L20 last night is easily the best dish that I have had recently. The sudachi was very assertive, the pickled ume created a beautiful red color, and the medai was very buttery.

Overall, the meal was great, but this was the best thing that I've eaten [lately].

Made up my own deal, rye bread, turkey, a few slices of capicola, E Z provolone, lettuce and tomato.

Picked up a couple of boxes of macarons from Macaron Chicago (http://www.macaronchicago.com/) at the Logan Square farmer's market today. These are easily the best macarons I've come across in Chicago, flavorwise, and especially texture-wise. The caramel fleur de sel macaron is the best thing I've eaten lately.

Fried oysters at McCormick & Schmick (National Harbor MD, but probably similar elsewhere). Plump and sweet, not tough and funky like most Japanese kaki-fry. Better than the whole-belly clams I had in New Hampshire. Wow.

California Navel Orange lovers will understand this one. I ate three of these before dinner yesterday. I have 9 left. They'll probably be gone by Friday morning. They are HERE!! I think it's been a few years since they have been anywhere close to this good. Wasn't there a bad frost in California several years ago that ruined the harvest? THESE are the California Navels I remember drooling over every late winter. The whole thing can be peeled in about 8 seconds, a shade under sugar sweet, bursting with juice, and Pavlov style mouthwateringly addictive. I've been monitoring the California Navel situation in my local grocery stores and fruit markets for about a month now. I thought a few weeks ago when I got some good ones that they were in-season, but then last week, I got some dryish ones. I was under the impression that the crop was gonna be lame again this year. My hope is that the ones I got yesterday are gonna be around for quite a few weeks, and the high season is starting NOW. I'm no ronnie_suburban with the camera, but these were even better than they look. You can call me simple, you can call me a rube. I don't care. The best thing I've eaten lately? A cold, in-season, California Navel:

Tony's - specifically North Riverside, but I'd imagine that hopefully every fruit joint will have them soon or already has them now. I didn't really have to spend too much time sifting through the bin, either. They were all pretty heavy - a few were noticeably light, but most of the ones I picked up were nice and heavy.

There is nothing better than a good one and nothing worse than a bad one (bit of an exaggeration). I bought a case of Sunkist navels at Costco about a week ago. They are wonderful this time of year.
