The operators of the Westbrook and Brookhaven supermarkets in Westmont and Darien (and one down south) have just opened their remodeled Brookhaven store in the former Boback's in the Burr Ridge Village Center. It makes your typical Whole Foods store look like a 7-11.

They are holding their Grand Openeing tomorrow (Wendesday April 8 ) and promising a lot of free samples.

It's about the nicest grocery store I've ever been in, and I'm going to be spending a lot of time there.

Then you likely never saw Byerly's when they were open here. Carpeting and a grand piano.

Any follow up on this place? I need to get a few things on my way home from work in Burr Ridge, and would like to know if this place is worth a stop for some good deli meat, some milk, and a couple other basics.

If it is like Whole Foods(price and grocery wise) I will pass.

edit: just looking at their weekely ad on their website it looks pretty good, I will stop on the way home.

I miss Byerly's so. Now the one in Schaumburg is a Dominick's.

Please post your findings. My parents live in that area and would love to try out a new place, as long as the prices aren't through the roof.

I didnt want to get on the wrong side of 83 during rush hour so I didnt go to the Burr Ridge location, however I went to the Darien location, and if the Burr Ridge location is simialr this place is a winner.

nice seafood selection(steamed crawfish($3.99 lb), clams, mussels, jumbo scallops, head on shrimp, nice looking whole fish.

nice butcher counter, whole baby lambs(head with eyes & tongue and all), fresh sausage(I bought some Polish sausage to smoke tomorrow),

above average deli counter(Daisy brand meats including veal bologna), its not Caputos deli, but few are

    nice bakery section as well.

produce section was large with alot of variety.

I'll be back, and I will definitely try the Burr Ridge location.

    Hi,

I'd still rather have the veal knuckles at $0.99/pound, American lamb chops and beautifully marbled steaks.

I dont buy steaks(or typically any meat) at chain grocery stores, I have a local butcher shop where I get my cut to order beef(prime when my wallet is fat) & other items.

For a supermarket this place wasnt bad.

I haven't been to their new store in Burr Ridge, but the Brookhaven Marketplace in Mokena is a big step up from the store in Darien -- twice the size, with a much better selection of just about everything. It's on Lagrange Rd, just a couple minutes south of the I-80 interchange.

It hasn't been mentioned, but Brookhaven is owned by the people who own Minos Imports. Most of their products can be found in the Mokena store, only a subset can be found in Darien.

    Thanks for the tip! :)

I'll have to give it a try. I used to visit the Bobak's store quite often but quite going there when the family started having troubles.

    thanks,

bit the bullet and went to the Burr Ridge location of the Brookhaven Market. I think I'll stick with the one in Darien. The Burr Ridge store is a little bigger, but other than a large prepared foods counter I didnt notice much the Darien store didnt have. As for the prepared foods, I'm not interested, I am a cook so I can probably do better on my own than what they offer.

The meat dept. at the Burr Ridge store had very little selection in their meat case, mostly everythingwas prewrapped/cut in display cases. The Darien store is the opposite. Their also appeared to be less seafood offered at the Burr Ridge store. The delis seemed similar. The produce section seemed similar as weel, with the glaring absence of lemon grass @ Burr Ridge.

Overall the Burr Ridge location was not worth getting on the wrong side of route 83 for a Friday commute home. I'll be sticking with the darien spot since Mokena is not in the cards.

I finally got over to the the Darien market. I don't know that I'll go that often but they did have an excellent selection of produce and ethnic products. However, I bought a whole red snapper and when I asked to have it filleted, I was told "sorry, I don't know how to do that." He claimed that they don't ever do that. I still bought it and filleted it myself but I thought that was a little odd. I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced that? i would have pushed it farther but clearly, this young man didn't know how to fillet a fish and I do so I let it go.

BTW, I made it last night and it was excellent.

I dont care for the Burr Ridge location of Brookhaven, and stick with the Darien location. Always reliable supply of pork, and now beef.

    a $6 porterhouse, really nice:

I received a $100 gift card for Brookhaven from my employer as part of my year end bonus, and have really put it to good use. The steaks above were purchased with it, plus a pork shoulder, and 4 slabs of BB's.

Their meat is really darn good, and it is becoming my go to spot when I cant get into the city to Peoria. I have said before I prefer the Darien location, I still need to get down to their Mokena store.

I was wanting to do smoke shoulder this weekend, or some BB's, but spares are on sale for $1.99/lb this week(not the best price but it will do), so I will get a slab or 2 to smoke for the NFL games on Saturday. Should be a balmy 15 degrees.

Picked up some pork belly, top round, spares, short ribs, char siu, habaneros, jalapenos, dogs and sudds root beer, and some cheese. Great place

Thanks for sharing Jim. I wish I could make it down there but my commute makes either the Burr Ridge store, if I workout, at Lifetime or the Darien store, if I don't, much more convenient. I love Brookhaven. I typically am there between 3 and 5 times a week. They have great cheap produce and always have a couple great deals on meat. The deli has a great selection and prices that should make Jewel and Dominick's blush. I can't imagine how much more I would spend in a week if I didn't have this great resource in my neighborhood.

    I agree, really like Brookhaven.

Theirs is the first add I check online every wednesday to see whats on sale for the week & plan the menu accordingly. Never had a bad piece of meat from them, and their produce is good like you mentioned.

I too have recently taken to Brookhaven for my grocery shopping. I wasn't sure how impressed I was going to be but the selection is really. I've had good luck with all the produce and meat that I've picked and the staff is pretty enthusiastic to go look for items in the back for you if need be.

I also noticed that they have Mici (cevapcici) there too. This saves me a TON of time to just run there when my kids are clamoring for it and I don't have to make the drive into the city just for this one item anymore.
One Mint Julep was the cause of it all.

I was in the south suburbs last night, wanted to hit Czimers in Homer Glenn for some crawfish boudin, but they closed early :? . Now I gotta go back to Czimers tonight.

Went on to the 2nd stop Brookhaven Mokena, I really like this location as I mentioed upthread, it is the biggest of the Brookhavens, and I like the meat and produce departments alot. Grabbed up some pork belly for pork belly cracklins & a Miller Amish whole fryer($.99/lb).

Brookhaven isnt a place I would do all my shopping, but for some meats, produce, and sale items they are one of my preferred sources.
