    Hi,

I enjoy the irony of a restaurant named Joe's Gizzard City, because gizzards are often considered poor man's food. Located in a town named Potterville, which evokes the town's name in It's a Wonderful Life if George Bailey had not lived.

I hope someday to get there, though for the moment the circumstances tickles me.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Did you try any of the gizzards at all? I have not had any in awhile, use to get them at Browns Chicken many, many years ago.

Potterville is my hometown, and the hometown of my parents, grandparents and other assorted relatives. :D

I have never had the gizzards myself, but they seem to be very popular amongst people who enjoy that sort of thing.

If anyone ever wants the full gizzard experience, I highly recommend a visit during the annual Gizzard Fest, which will be June 11-13 this year. It's the first year my aunt isn't in charge of the planning, but I'm sure it will still be lots of fun.

Unfortunately, the block of Main Street just to the north of Joe's burned down this past Saturday. The entire block is compeltely destroyed. With the current economic situation in Michigan, it is unlikely to be rebuilt soon.

So, anyone who has the opportunity, I encourage you to visit Joe's and the city of Potterville. Especially now, when they could really use the support.

    merkay,

I'm sure Potterville had nothing to do with the movie. :D

I just checked to find Potterville is 235 miles from my house. If you were me, what else could I plan on doing if I were to venture that far for gizzard fest?

Earlier today, there was a query via e-mail about attending a beef testicle festival, which is 315 miles one way. I am not adverse to travelling for my food.

    Regards,

Thanks for mentioning Gizzard Fest. I have marked my calendar. Here's a link to the official Gizzard Fest website. Of course there will be an eating contest: first person to finish two pounds of gizzards wins.

The most direct route to Potterville is I-94 to I-69. Almost at the junction of the two highways is Marshall, home of Turkeyville. As you might guess their menu is full of turkey items. It's gotten mixed reviews here but it might be worth a stop to ease into a day of poultry eating.

    Cathy,

Potterville is about 15 minutes from Lansing/East Lansing. East Lansing is the home of Michigan State University, so there are some museums, beautiful campus gardens, and a nice downtown area to stroll.

Lansing has a lovely zoo (Potter Park - no connection to Potterville), and a great riverwalk that stretches through most of the city. You could also go to the Michigan Historical Museum and Library (my college job) or check out a Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball game (my sister's college job).

Potterville is also less than an hour from Ann Arbor and all it's many joys.

Oh, and to get to Potterville from Chicago, you drive through Kalamazoo, home to Bell's Brewery.

ETA: I was just looking at the Gizzard Fest website, and the kid in the chicken hat is a relative, and other relatives are in most of the other photos there.

Thats grim to hear about the fire...bad news! The Gizzard fest sounds cool, Firework auction, car show, tractor show, Gizzards and texas hold em'. What more can ya want?
Hummm....some kegs of Bell's (third coast beer) and were solid.
Will they be serving brew there?

They will be serving beer at Gizzard Fest, but it will most likely be an assortment of Bud and/or Miller products, perhaps served in a plastic milk jug. Quantity over quality.

The bar does serve more of a variety.

I'm very bummed that Gizzard Fest is the same weekend as Andersonville's Midsommarfest this year. I will be working at Midsommarfest, so I won't be making the trip home.

But, if anyone here does make the trip, this year, or in the future, I'd love to hear your thoughts. My aunt isn't running it this year, so who knows what will happen. :P
