I came across a surprising find yesterday at
Fresh Farms—a half-gallon carton of milk for 89 cents. The "downside?" It was fat-free. I usually refuse to drink fat-free/skim milk, but I figured this was too good a deal to pass up, and since I have an abundance of cream, I could add a little of that, use it in baking, etc. if it sucked.
Turns out it's fantastic. It's not thin and watery like skim milk usually is and tastes at least like 1%. I drank a glass plain and I couldn't tell the difference. I baked it in corn pudding and there was no watery texture. I had to stop myself from pouring another glass. The best part is that the cows are free-range, grass-fed, and not loaded with hormones.
I don't know how long this sale will last, but I suggest stopping by if you're in the area. It's in the milk section way at the end of the store, but in the floor case, not the one against the wall with the jugs of milk. I think I'll buy this from now on instead of Deans/Jewel brand/etc., as a gallon would only be $1.98, cheaper even than Jewel milk sales, which is often $2.29.
