I'm searching for whole grain waffles. Jewel and Dominick's carry them, but only occasionally, and besides, I'd rather patronize an independent grocery. Anyone know of a regular source for these? I live in Andersonville but can travel (have a car). Thanks!

    Make them yourself.

I advise just substituting some wheat germ in your unbleached all-purpose flour in a waffle recipe -- you'll get a better texture without the bran. You'll get the flavor and the nutrition, but obviously not the fiber bonus.

And visit the Waffleizer for ideas with what else to do with a waffle maker.

Trader Joe's has a very decent "multi-grain" pancake/waffle mix. I went from serving my boys totally white flour pancakes to this mix and they didn't bat an eyelash.

That said, we have recently abandoned healthy/grainy pancakes and are totally loving Buttermilk Griddle Cakes from the Fannie Farmer/Boston School of Cooking cookbook. They are so good and fluffy and tangy and just as a pancake should be! But they won't win any awards in the health category. I have toyed with the thought of tossing some flax seeds or something like that in there to feel like a better mom. But I just never seem to go buy the flax seeds.

    good luck.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure I saw them at Lincolnwood Produce. Go all the way to the west end of the store where the ice cream freezers are. They have them sitting on a rack at room temperature in packages of 2 or 4.

Aldi's has a "fit and natural" or whatever their healthy brand of stuff, frozen multigrain waffle. I tried them (ordinarily wouldn't but I thought I'd give them a shot - our waffle maker is much too small) and was pretty happy. I don't know if they're entirely whole grain but they're pretty high in fiber for waffles. I don't think they're always around, but they should be available right now.

Hi- All the Evanston area Jewel and Dominick's sells frozen Kashi whole grain waffles, and Whole Foods sells at least 3 differerent brands of frozen whole grain waffles. Arrowhead Mills also manufactures a mix, which is good, and which can be purchased at Whole Foods, and other select stores. I think this mix calls for eggs and milk, but you can use one heaping tablespoon of soy flour for each egg.

Van's is another brand of waffles that caters to the "healthy" crowd. Along with whole grain, they also have a gluten-free blueberry waffle that is very good, IMO. You can find Van's waffles at Whole Foods, Super Target, and select Jewel stores.
