Although I have read LTH for months now, I have never written. Yesterday I just happened to be driving down Western Ave and spotted this ice cream place called Shawn Michelle's. Even though it is cold outside this is one of the best places for ice cream. I immediately thought of LTH because these are the type of places that LTH seems to thrive on, neighborhood unknown family owned businesses.

The flavors are so different and all homemade with fresh ingredients. I tried the chocolate(I know kind of safe and boring but I had a taste for chocolate), it was very good. My second choice was the Honey Graham Cracker Supreme. Oh was that good. I actually got it in a cup because I wasn't sure I would finish it, no need for the cup it was all gone.

Below is the link. I'm assuming that the two people are a couple, couldn't be any nicer. They also let you sample the ice cream. Check out the flavors, they are certainly unique. The location is in Blue Island at 11925 S. Western. I was so impressed by the service and most importantly the ice cream. I can't wait to go back. Here's the link, enjoy!

I am going to have to check this place out next time we're headed south: in particular, two ice cream flavors intrigue me: Taste of Heaven Supreme "Bean Pie," and Melanin Magic (a quick google reveals this to be a combo of chocolate, mint, and cookies n cream)

Shawn Michelle's is definitely worth a visit. Maybe not the very highest quality ice cream but they have interesting flavors you won't find anywhere else.

The bean pie ice cream is good—it tastes mostly of nutmeg but I think you can find a few bean fragments here and there.

That block of Western used to be a real bean pie destination. Almost across the street was a.m.'s Bakery, an excellent bakery and the source of some of Chicago's best bean pies. Unfortunately it closed a couple years ago.

If you're in Blue Island, consider heading another 10 blocks south on Western to Stefanelli's, a nice little Italian market that serves an excellent Freddy.

Shawn Michelle's is proud to use high quality ingredients in our ice cream, we do not use any preservatives or stabilizers, so you are getting the very best product you can. In addition, our Bean Pie Ice Cream doesn't have any beans in it, chunks of a fully cooked bean pie are added to the base, so what you'll find is delicious pieces of creamy pie and morsels of pie crust. We invite you to come visit us and experience it for yourself. We pride ourselves in serving high quality and unique ice cream flavors and we offer home delivery of our ice cream. We look forward to serving you and providing you with excellent customer service and superior ice cream. After a mention in the Trib and a gut-busting, stellar lunch at Chuck's, the heat had piqued my desire for ice cream, and I stopped by. I had the caramel graham cracker, which was a bit sweet, but really well-executed. The graham cracker pieces were sizable and not mushy in the least--just enough resistance, without being crunchy. My friend's coconut creme was even better, from the two brief tastes I had. Less sweet than my own (a good thing), I got big coconut flavor, even if I didn't observe any actual bits of flesh--again, just a brief sample, but very solid. Two sizable scoops came out to just under four dollars. All in all, it was a nice South Side foil to my recent trip to Black Dog, which was equally awesome, and equally reasonable. Worth a stop, both of them.
