    Hello!

Anyone know where can I buy whole lambs? Would prefer less than $2.99/lb.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

A friend of mine raises sheep at her farm in Hampshire and sells them for butchering in the spring. No, you don't have to do it yourself. She delivers them to a slaughterhouse and then a butcher does his thing. You get it back nicely butchered, in a box. I think she said she sells thr lamb for $2.50/lb and then you pay for processing too.

I can ask her for the specifics again. It may take a few days for her to respond. The sheep are pasture raised. Grass and hay.

When I hear back from her I'll post details.

    Nero,

Nea Agora is an old school butcher, really more packing house, with an emphasis on lamb, whole included. Call for prices and, as I have not been in a year or so, to make sure they are still open for business.

    Enjoy,

That was going to be my suggestion too. Never bought a whole lamb there, but have seen lots of 'em hanging in the back waiting to be butchered. Given the prices on cuts there, I would imagine they would offer a price within your 2.99 per pound budget. Happens to be terrific, full-flavored lamb too.

I'd imagine that any ethnic store with a butcher's counter could get a whole lamb for you. I've had occasion to order half a goat, and they carry out the whole thing before cutting it up for me. If they have whole goats, it's not hard to imagine a place getting a whole lamb. (I've ordered from a couple of places, but most frequently from Produce World at the corner of Dempster and Waukegan.)

I'd recommend ordering from someplace that leans toward Eastern Europe or the Middle East, but I'd start with whatever is most convenient to where you live and see if someone can't help you.

Yep - Chicago Meat and Lebanese Meat Market both have them. You might also want to call Sahar II as well, I've gotten a lot of good lamb cut to order there, as well as whole goats.

Mint Creek Farm also has excellent lamb, although their prices may be outside the range you're looking for. They are at the Logan Sq. Farmer's Market every Sunday, and I think they may deliver in the city on the days they're in town.

I also recall seeing them advertised in store at the Marketplace on Oakton at Easter time.
