I would be most grateful for any recommendations for a really great non-steakhouse steak in Chicago (South Loop up to Lincoln Square is the acceptable travel area). I am trying to steer some out of town friends in the right direction – the more vocal half of the group definitely want steak but the other half do not. Some of my initial thoughts were MK, Naha, One-Sixty Blue, and Landmark Grill. Any thoughts?

Sabatino's....Large New York Strip....as good or better than any steak in the city....first recommended to us by a bartender at Gibsons..

    4441 W. Irving Park Rd.

Just also happens to be my favorite overall restaurant in.....well pretty much anywhere...

Best steak I ever had was at Mas, NY Strip. Alas, it is no more.

I had a great hangersteak at Sepia with bone marrow donuts.

I am not a steak eater, but my partner swears by the steak at North Pond.

Wagyu steak with bone marrow vinaigrette at Purple Pig is pretty awesome. I'm not sure if it's always on the menu though.

    Cafe Touche'-Edison Park
In my opinion, for the money this one can't be beat:
Faux Filet Cafe de Paris – 19.95
Grilled 10 oz. sirloin strip steak with fine herbs butter and red wine reduction

I haven't tried their other steaks but I can vouch for this one.

Other items I have had there include the roast chicken (excellent) braised short ribs (very good) and bouillabase, very generous portion and also very good.

Be warned the place is very busy (read noisy) on weekends. I have enjoyed it much more on weekday visits.

Mado has that hanger steak with gorgonzola polenta, they could be lured in by that and then won over to other things as well.

Mon Ami Gabi in the Belden Stratford in lincoln park is always a good time, with solid bistro food and several different steak frites/hangar steak options--and they take reservations via open table. Not cutting edge but very reliable, good service and a nice menu of steak/non-steak options.

Joe's Stone Crabs has a very good aged ribeye; they also have a great bone in fillet mignon.

Go to Hugo's. It's a seafood restaurant, and you can tell that to the non-steak-eaters. Tell the steak-eaters that it's owned by the same folks as Gibson's Steakhouse next door, and they share the same kitchen, so when you order a steak at Hugo's, it's a Gibson's steak.

This is the post where I was hoping to say thank you for the recommendations, tell you where the group decided to go, and to give you feedback on their experience. However, as often happens with larger groups, the whole thing fell apart. So I have to limit my follow up post to a simple thank you for your recommendations. Hopefully the information in the thread will prove useful to others, or to me, in the future. Thanks again.
