Getting ready for our girls' night out next Monday and a friend wanted to try one of the following places: Laurel Mediterranean Grill, Tassos or Basils. I didn't see anything here and wondered if anyone has tried any of these.
    Thanks in advance,
    Janey

I have been to Basils many times. Being Greek myself, I feel that they are doing this right. Great food, great prices, good service. I have been to just about all of the Greek restaurants in Chicagoland, and I am tired of the white and blue look. Here you will find something completely different. This used to be in the old Lorenzo's Italian Steakhouse location. They have been open since November 2009, and everytime I go there (usually on the weekends) it's been pretty busy.

Menu items I have eaten there: Yiayias Makaronada, Rack of Lamb, Thin cut lamb chops, Basils Beef and Whole Sea Bass. My favorite apps are: Grilled octopus, Gigantes (giant beans) and they gyro that they say they make there.

Desserts are always good, and definitely a good way to end the meal.

Today we tried Laurel Mediterranean Grill in Naperville for our first time. It's in the center at the corner of Iroquois and Ogden that is home to about 5 other restaurants including Joy Yee Noodles. The space is very open and airy with none of the heavy decoration some like places can get into. Once seated we were given a basket of warm bread and a small bowl of finely chopped tomatoes, red peppers, onion, parsley and olive oil to spread on the bread. I could have had a whole meal of this, the bread was lightly crusted and the inside was smooth and easily pulled apart to sop up the spillage on the plate. I ordered Kofte which was 4 medium grilled meatballs of a beef/lamb mix served over a pilaf and with a small side of Piyaz which is white beans, peppers, parsley, tomatoes and olive oil served cold. My partner had 2 grilled Lake Superior White fish filets with pilaf and roasted vegetables. Neither of us had room for anything more and brought home a lot. Our waiter was enthusiastic, charming and explained every item on the menu for us to the point of almost going overboard! He was very attentive, kept the glasses filled and even sent us home with a half order of the bread. This was a very enjoyable lunch and worth the drive over.

I've been to Basil's a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The fish I had the first time was just what I wanted: perfectly grilled with a little spritz of olive oil and lemon. Wasn't wild about the potatoes, but there's always rice.

All day on weekdays they have 1/2 price appetizers at the bar. Mussels were good, and a big portion for $5.50. The spanokopita was also good.

Room is very nice, and lots of space for outdoor dining.

    Try it...you'll like it!
