    Howdy!
Mr. Pie and his dad and I are meeting for a movie, followed by dinner, tonight in Highland Park. The movie won't get out until after 10:15, so we need to find a place that serves at least til midnight.

I'd like to keep it relatively cheap ($15 or less per plate) and somewhat healthy (no pizza, burgers/hot dogs, etc). We're willing to travel around a little, and Mr. Pie's dad lives in Crystal Lake, so someplace heading west would be okay too. Idears? All I could come up with is CJ Arthur's in Wilmette but I'd like to offer more than one choice and others without live music, too.

    Thanks!

If it's anything like when I was in high school in HP, your choices are Dunkin Donuts or Denny's...

If Denny's or Dunkin Donuts doesn't do it for you, Nortons Bar and Grill is always a decent option at that price point. Typical sports bar menu, but everything I've ordered had been good over the years. The Web site says they are open until 11. It's more burger-centric, but The Lantern in Lake Forest serves dinner until 11, too.

    Hi,

Norton's is a good suggestion. I usually get the chili at that hour.

If it is later in the evening, I will drive ten miles north to Full Moon Inn on Route 41 on the border of Lake Bluff and North Chicago. I will share an order of fried chicken and waffles with a friend for DIY chicken and waffles. I have them bring a side order of gravy, because I am not keen on the pancake syrup.

I did visit Denny's recently to find it was worse than before. I'm not stupid, I had a 2-for-1 coupon to keep me from wasting money in addition to stomach.

If you want to go to bars and forgo eating (well or at all), then go to Highwood. One bar is attached to a small bowling alley where popcorn may be the only bar snack. I've only gone there late a few times with people who really wanted a drink.

    The Alley Highwood - http://www.bowlhighwood.com
    210 Green Bay Road, Highwood - (847) 433-0304

Open late is The Grill in Highwood. I typically order with fire roasted hummus mounded with tomatoes and cucumbers salad in a vinagrette with toasted on a griddle pita bread. If I don't have to share, this can be a meal.

They have a floating closing hour of 11:30 pm until 2 pm. They remain open if there are patrons. They open at 11:30 am.

There is a new place at the corner of Park Avenue and Sheridan Road (east of railroad tracks) whose purpose is late night drinking, light meals and desserts. I don't recall the name, I have't been there. Yummy Bowl is nearby as a reference (don't waste your time at Yummy Bowl, it is just yucky).

Mmm! I like all those things. I'll have to swing by after the next movie we see out there.

I wouldn't waste your time or your money at Vibe. My wife and I went there and I'm not sure which was worse, the food, the drinks or the service. The food was bland at best and served warm. When I asked my server what types of whiskey and scotch they had here response was "I don't know" She called over one of the owners and asked her what whiskey they served. The owner's response was "Is Maker's Mark a whiskey?" I should have known right there to get up and leave.

I got the impression that a local husband and wife opened the place thinking it would be a cool place for them and their friends to hang out.

    jtm,

Thanks for the advice. It isn't quite my cup of tea, so my being there is highly unlikely.

Have you gone to the Tasting Room on Elm, just off of Second Street? It seems like a Vibe type of place, though I haven't really gone in. Actually I tried, and because it wasn't posted hours, the staff did a study in ignoring person tapping politely at door. All I wanted was a menu. Whatever I really wanted, they never bothered to check. I never bothered to inquire further.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Vibe has closed. Sign in the window indicates PLEEZE will open there soon.

210 Restaurant replaced The Alley around Thanksgiving last year, tore out the bowling lanes and has turned it into an interesting-looking industrial-chic-antique-y supper club/lounge, which is a mouthful. My band played there last week and I arrived early because I wanted to grab a quick bite & had heard good things about co-owner/chef Jeff Tomchek's offerings.

Grazed on a sliced rare BBQ short rib sandwich on a crusty but soft roll, with a horseradish aioli that mixed in with the au jus quite nicely, and the short rib itself had a muted smoke aspect but a nice bark. The side chopped salad with Gorgonzola cheese was a really nice counterpoint. I liked it a lot.

Check out the menu on the website--it has some unique offerings, and 210 itself has a one-of-a-kind cool vibe.
