Nice work, wimperoo - those fried pickles look really good. How did you get the batter to stick?

Thanks. I soaked the pickles in buttermilk for about 10 minutes before coating them with the batter.

It all looks delicious, but its the corn dogs I find particularly appealing.

Oh yum! Only thing missing is a cross-sectional shot of the corn dog, like, with a nice bite taken out!

What did you use for batter?

We were too busy eating and forgot to take pictures.

Batter was just a basic one.

    1 cup yellow cornmeal
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon black pepper
    Few shakes of cayenne pepper
    1/4 cup white sugar
    4 teaspoons baking powder
    1 egg
    1 cup buttermilk

The day is approaching, this Saturday.

While, I enjoyed the pickle and onion ring batter we used, does anyone have any batter/coating recipes that they like?

I tried a bunch of from-scratch recipes years ago for a bacon cookoff, but the one that I liked best was one using Krusteaz® pancake mix. I'm not kidding. I think this is the one:

I don't know what that "bake at 375°" business is about, just fry 'em.

Cut a slit all the way up the hotdog, insert a piece of cooked bacon the same length as the dog, dip in batter and fry. I tried wrapping the dogs in bacon before dipping but then they fried up in weird shapes. Add bacon fat to your fryer fat for added... um, fat.

Going to be a busy day -- it's Purim and St. Joseph's Day, too. Poppyseed- and hot-dog-filled, corn-battered zeppole?

Yesterday was the big day. National Corn Dog Day 2011 means a big party with friends featuring a fried food extravaganza starring the corn dog.

What do you do when you have leftover batter and a plate of brownies?

You fry one up of course.

Just a really great day. Tons of excellent food, drinks and fun.

Those brownies look amazing...perhaps what the Schwa crew were snacking on all weekend?

Surprisingly, the brownies were the next best thing after the corn dogs and curds. I figured it wouldn't be that good and was just doing it as a joke, but the chocolate chips inside the brownies got all gooey and delicious.
