Justin Kaufmann of the WBEZ Blog has set up a live conversation with a bunch of Chicago food journalists, and fortunately I've already made my mulefoot pozole for the Hideout get-together tomorrow, so I can join in. Here's the write-up as posted on the Vocalo blog:

This week on “The Lunchbox,” we invite Chicago’s culinary media to the table (cafeteria reference) to talk about the recent James Beard nominations, restaurant news and notes and the new ways we cover food in Chicago.

Guests include: Steve Dolinsky (ABC-7, Vocalo), Kevin Pang (Chicago Tribune), Audarshia Townsend (312 Dining Diva), Julia Kramer (Timeout Chicago), David Hammond (Eight Forty-Eight, LTH Forum), Chuck Sudo (Chicagoist) and many more. It’s your chance to ask Pang about Cheeseburgers, Dolinsky about his headshots and Sudo about well, Marcus Gilmer.

To my surprise, about 20 minutes before airtime or whatever you call it in a chat session, I got an email inviting me to be part of this space-age thing, apparently because of a recent blog post. So it was a very large discussion (not much about the Beard awards, actually) but one with some definite points of interest, especially Kevin the Pang's casually tossed off mention that the Trib food section is about to get a total makeover... part of which will include Pang being Mr. Cheap Eats now. So that will be interesting to see.

Anyway, you can read the whole thing in about 15 minutes or less here. It was fun!

It was an amusing way for me to kill the lunch hour. My favorite question from the peanut gallery: "[Comment From Qua] Do you think Chicago food media spends too much time talking about Chicago food media?" After general agreement, the group actually talked about food for nearly ten solid minutes then returned to their previous discussion about Chicago food media (to be fair, it was in response to another provocative question from the peanut gallery). As Mike says, the complete transcript, with plenty of worthwhile material, can be read in far less than an hour.
