Tainted Raw Milk in Chicago

If you are a raw milk drinker....just saw this:

The wife called her doctor the other day to complain about acute abdominal pain and one of the first questions he asked was if she had consumed any raw milk products. Makes sense now.

Does she use that specific dairy in Indiana as her source? I hope she's OK.

No. We're not raw milk people. I just brought it up because that was his first question and it wasn't something I even considered. Maybe he heard or read something.

Oh, and she's fine, thanks. Just a touch of stomach flu.

It's surprising that the doctor would even ask that question unless, perhaps, there have been other cases that he's recently seen.

Kind of feel sorry for the bad press that small dairy farmers might get from this "outbreak," but heck, maybe it doesn't matter: much beef has been recalled and many people have been sickened by bad beef so far in 2010, and still there's no let-up in the current burger craze.

That's what I thought and that's why I chimed in when I saw this topic. I didn't talk to him so I couldn't ask the follow-up question.

As for farmers taking a hit, you're right. Every person consuming raw milk products assumes a certain modicum of risk that nobody ever expects to play out. For most, it'll be viewed as the occasional blip in the grand scheme of things. I don't believe it'll impact the market at all.

I wonder if MD's get some sort of official notification about such "outbreaks"? Maybe they are told to be alert for patients with certain symptoms.
