I was in court until brunch time today at Bridgeview. A friend wanted to chat and grab a bite.

I couldn't for the life of me think of where to go & while I knew there was a Bridgeview thread, my cell battery was dying. I told my friend we would find Middle Eastern on Harlem, thinking I would just divine one of the places I read about as we drove along. I told him there was something on the left just past Tony's fine foods because the little grocer I like to hit is on the right.

Then I saw a strip mall with Huckleberry Pancake House & some Arabic script. I told my friend to turn immediately figuring we would choose between Middle Eastern and this diner.

My friend wanted diner food. We went in and the place was quiet, too quiet in that oh no it's gonna be a bad diner experience kind of way. Our feisty server, Michelle asked what we wanted to drink & I ordered an iced tea after she shook her head no in response to my question as to whether the OJ was fresh squeezed. My friend, fine gent that he is, ordered a Dr. Pepper because they have Pepsi products.

My friend didn't trust Michelle because she was aggressive, I told him I did and thought she wouldn't steer me wrong. I let her know I was torn between the savory of the veggie wrap & pancakes. She asked me which pancakes and I asked her what she suggested. She said the apple pancakes & I said sold! She then asked if I wanted powdered sugar & butter. I knew she was a keeper with that because I loathe powdered sugar as a garnish. Yes to butter & no to powdered sugar.

When the pancakes arrived I was shocked. They overlapped across a platter-style plate. On top were perfectly caramelized, spiced, & sliced apples. Real apples. You could have taken the apples from off the top of my pancakes and encased them in crust for a pie. They were apple pie spiced apples. Wow! This was amazing. I'm anxious to return.

My friend ordered the french dip w/ a side of au jus. It looked more like a steak sandwich complete with a healthy topping of sauteed peppers, mushrooms, onions, & thoughtfully melted cheese. He said it was delicious.

    Total bill was $18.69.

I can't wait to go back!

That's a nice find! For future reference, GNR Winner Al Bawadi Grill is in the same strip mall as Tony's. Here's a link to Mike G's original Bridgeview thread where there is quite a bit of conversation about Albawadi as well as some other places.

So very, very close. That said, I'm glad I didn't find it today since I found Huckleberry Pancake House. :)

I wish I had known about that place a couple of years ago. I had a client right around the corner on Roberts Rd and lunches in that area were always a challenge.

Back again today with two friends. The carmel apple pancakes were just as good as I recalled.

    This place is dangerous!

    Hi,

Lately I've notice Mom2 favors pancakes when we dine out. It likely falls into the category of foods she likes, but doesn't make for herself. When pairs4life got all poetic over apple pancakes, it attracted my attention.

I brought the Moms to Huckleberry Pancake House for lunch on Saturday. It was quiet when we arrived around 2 pm. Since they close at 3 pm, this was nearing the end of their day.

Mom2 ordered the highly praised apple pancakes. When they arrived, it was clear those fresh apples were cooked enough to warm and yet retain their texture. The quantity of pancakes and apples was generous. I thought she might have enough for lunch and dinner. She pretty much ate it all.

I ordered biscuits and gravy with two sunnyside up eggs on the side. This is a diner where two eggs miraculously become four. The biscuits I was assured were baked on the premises. If they were, it was earlier in the day because they sliced, buttered and grilled the interior. The sausage gravy was not the best, it was flecked with a lot of pepper. Unfortunately it must have been stale pepper, because it didn't offer any pepper taste. If you like your sausage gravy not very peppery, then it may please you.

My Mom ordered their special of pumpkin pancakes and a side order of corned beef hash. I inquired if the corned beef hash was canned or made on the premises. When the waitress advised canned, my Mom began to back off. This gal promises these were better than average canned corned beef. Mom decided to go with it, though I was sure she would be disappointed. As predicted, it was not very good.

Mom was happy with her pumpkin pancakes. The only flaw there was a powder sugar based glaze they brought to the table for the pumpkin pancakes. Mom without tasting it ladled it on. If she had tasted a sample first, she might have left it alone. She later admitted the pancakes as-is or with some pancake syrup would be have been enough.

Purely on the strength of the apple pancake, we could envision returning. I have a feeling if we had pairs4life feisty waitress, we might have steered clear any disappointments.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

As I was eating my somewhat bland and uninspiring Scottish pancake from Owen & Engine today, I recalled my favorite pancake. Now keep in mind, I'm not a "pancake" person, and always prefer a tart edge to my sweets but I think the apple, cranberry, granola pancakes from Nookies are the pancake pinnacle to me. Fresh apples still retaining their texture and some crunch, a not-too-sweet or heavy granola and the tart bite of whole cranberries. Delicious!

This place sounds just like something my mother would like. Are the blueberry pancakes the kind with real blueberries in the batter? She likes that better than the pie-filling-topping kind.

Can someone give me a quick lowdown on Bridgeview? I have never been there and I want to be able to tell her what it's like; if this restaurant is near the downtown area, if there's plenty of parking, etc.

I've never eaten here, but I was in the parking lot a few days ago. It's in a tiny little 4 store strip mall on a busy stretch of Harlem ave (7200 W) is Harlem. One of the storefronts is an Indian Restaurant, another is a Middle Eastern bakery. Not sure if you were looking for some sleepy lil suburb with a quaint downtown area. This place is right on busy Harlem ave. It has a parking lot.
