Just wondering if anyone has tried it. The prices look very reasonable and there are already photos of the food on their website. :) We will be trying it soon, just wanted to share as it looks like a great, cheap option.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to be different in the veritable ocean of quick serve restaurants. Mustard and Onions Grill makes that difference by filling the air around their simple but special little restaurant/stand with the mouth watering, aroma of fresh sweet onions grilling , greeting customers with a genuine friendly smile, and serving them delicious food as quickly as humanly possible.

    Hi,

I was last night at Washburne Culinary School's annual fundraiser and scholarship program. They were quite excited to announce Washburne will have students run a food concession stand at Buckingham Fountain this summer. It is an interesting cooperation between the Park District and the school.

From reading the press release for Mustard and Onions Grill, it seems the Park District is looking to food concessions in the park as a source of income. Maybe it is the only place where street food is possible and beyond the Mayor's reach.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

i've been & had dog & fry. it's a pretty good standard Vienna dog, with all the Chicago trimmings available. fries were pretty good as well. if i were in the area & wanted a quick bite, i would definitely go back. since Jimmy's at Belmont/Kilbourn closed a couple of years ago (again), it's the only hot dog STAND within a couple of blocks.

i also see that they put out a few more tables/umbrellas out since the weather has been (slowly) getting better.

They are doing this concept at Berger Park in Rogers Park/Edgewater.

Used to be the Dawghaus Cafe..now called the Waterfront Cafe

    http://www.dawghauscafe.com/MENU%20.html

Nothing stellar..but it was close walk in the stroller with my 2 year old nephew on a nice sunny day to visit the park.
He liked his plain hot dog..although I chalk that up as general inexperience. :)

    Decent hot dogs.

The real standout is the polish sausage. They use Maxwell Street's. Big, hot, juicy, with a nice snap.

All sandwiches come with fries...quite the deal!

Plus, the guy who runs the place is as nice as can be.

There is nothing beyond the Mayor's reach. The Park District and the City may be two separate entities, but they don't sneeze without checking with the Mayor's Office first. More to the point this would seem like an opportune time to relax the rules against mobile hot food vendors in the City. I think those carts add a lot of character and options to big cities, not to mention needed revenue.

As an aside, my wife ran into a very nice old Greek lady whose son used to own Jimmy's, which was my go to place since I live on the next block.

do u know if they closes due to lack of business? i liked their food. i also remember the first incarnation of Jimmy's which closed at least 8-9 (if not more) years before they opened & closes again about 3-4 years ago. i use to like their steak sandwiches when i was a kid.

Went to Mustard and Onions grill a couple weeks ago. Real good vienna dog, all ingredients
were quite fresh. Owner was real nice and bought me a large drink. I also ordered a tamale
boat. (Which he was real proud of) A beef tamale floating in a bowl of his homeade chili.
I thought it was pretty good. He said he would make a mother in law too, just ask.

Fries were hot and fresh, but thin food service variety. Didn't dig too much.

A long time ago there used to be a candy factory (Powerhouse) on the site of all those new townhomes at Kilbourn and Belmont-- when that closed (circa 2000?), they probably lost a lot of business. The construction workers for the townhomes fueled the second re-opening, but that too faded. Is the owner even still alive?

My husband's grandfather used to live on Kilbourn and worked at the factory. My husband remembers going to Jimmy's as a boy-- he and his 2 brothers would be given a little money and be sent to Jimmy's just to get them out from underfoot. He also fondly remembers the 'factory seconds'-- mis-wrapped Almond Joys in particular. Sometimes there would be a sugar spill and grandpa would bring home the sugar they swept up-- it just needed a little sifting!

We live in the neighborhood now (howdy Fujisan and Evildoc, we might be neighbors!) and spend a lot of time at Kilbourn park. I'm looking forward to trying Mustard and Onions Grill soon.

    Cheers, Jen

The owner of Jimmy's was Michael, the son of the lady my wife met. When he died about 8 years ago, she sold the business to some people who ran it for awhile but stopped paying the bills - that's why it closed again 3 years ago. I live in one of those new townhomes so was sad to see it close (along with Sammy's Express near Belmont & Cicero.) Since my daughter loves going to the park, I'm sure I'll try Mustard and Onions Grill sometime soon.

Anyone seen any signs of life at Mustard and Onions Grill this year? I saw someone working in the back one day, but nothing else. The website still says "closed for the season". We are ready for a hot dog and fries!
