I'm moving to Clark/Foster in a few weeks and while most of my money will be direct deposited at the Hopleaf, I'm wondering where the best grocery stores are in the area. I'm aware of the Persian and Thai stores and seem to recall a produce mart on Lawrence/Kedzie that had a good selection of things. Anything I'm missing besides Jewel and Dominick's?

you're a hop, skip, and a jump away from several asian stores on argyle and in the argyle area (between broadway and sheridan), golden pacific market on broadway, delray farms, edgewater produce (on clark, north of foster), and lotsa other places. i live in the area and find my cup runneth over with great selection.

Don't over look the obvious....Edgewater Produce, across the street from Jewel on Clark.

Good sound nutrional advice suggests you should shop the perimeter of a store and avoid all the processed crap in the middle aisles. I avoid all of that by heading to Edgewater Produce. My routine, although I have been out of it about six weeks, was to workout at Cheetah listening to Car Talk, then head to EP for my shopping. Even buying enough meat for the freezer, I seldom spent more that $30. Quite a bit less than an average short trip to Jewel. I used to buy more frozen and processed foods, as I sometimes go a week or two without cooking at home....with the savings, I can afford to throw out half the stuff I don't get around to and still be ahead of the game.

I am a sucker for EP's carnitas, which pretty much negates the workout. Their staples selection is nothing to write home about, nor are their meats and deli. I buy lots of their fresh chicken and have always been pleased. They sometimes have good surprises, like real Spanish chorizo at fantastic prices.

Pacific Market on Broadway is a very clean and accessible store for Asian products, mostly Vietnamese and some Thai.

Welcome to the hood. I heard from one of my tenants that the sangria at Rioja is very good. I haven't been yet, but I will try it this week.

We are also supposed to get a pasta shoppe of some sort, according to one of the email blasts I get....although I haven't seen anything about that in a while.

Yes, Middle East Bakery...very good. The tip bucket is there for a reason, use it and you will be rewarded.
