    >>Since it's still just a rumor, but might be useful information, I thought I'd post this here: Andy's Frozen Custard has leased the old B&N space in downtown Evanston. <<

It now appears to be official. The May issue of North Shore magazine devotes a page to the story, saying the store opens "this month," and gives the following info:
    Andy's Frozen Custard
    719 Church Street
    Evanston
    847/864-8009

According to owner Andy Kuntz, his parents started their Missouri-based custard business in 1986 after meeting Leon Schneider of Milwaukee's Leon's Frozen Custard, who taught them all about the frozen treat.

I think it's technically not the former B&N spot but right next door to it; a storefront for Clear (internet on the go) has recently opened there. Unless they've broken up the space.

Does Andy's have any other locations or anyone know anything about the owners? I love frozen custard and that'd be a great addition to downtown Evanston, assuming it's good.

Buffalo Grove is on a roll. :) Not only do we have 2 Uzbeki restaurants, but now there are two new middle eastern places as well.

Pita City, on Dundee Rd. just west of Buffalo Grove Rd. on the south side of the street, is having its grand opening and Bait Cafe, middle eastern, has opened in the old Dasarong location in a strip mall on the northwest corner of Buffalo Grove Rd. and Dundee Rd. The Dasarong sign is still up on the building, so don't get confused.

    Pita City

    Bait Cafe
    706 S. Buffalo Grove Rd.

Yeah, but will I need to get the cops involved if I eat at either of these places?

    Hi,

I met a lurker the other night who read through the Uzbek high crimes and misdemeanors thread, they were laughing themselves silly. They were especially pleased with the police report backing up the events. I wonder if the original poster will wake up next Sunday determined to find a new website to complain to. Can't wait!

As a resident of Buffalo Grove, this whole Uzbeck/Police thing has me hanging my head in shame. Next thing you know the Buffalo Grove Village signs will have "Home of the Food Police" on them. And on top of everything else, now I'm scared to eat at any local restaurants without my AAA bond card.

Fulton's Chicken is now called either "Fulton's Barbecue House" or "Just Que", depending on whether you believe the sign or the carry-out menu. At any rate, they now feature a hickory log burning aquarium smoker. I posted a quick first impression in the Fulton's thread.

Today, while driving down Davis in Evanston, I noticed that the Phoenix Inn space, which has been closed since September 2008 due to a fire in the building, has a big "Opening Soon" sign in the window. However, it didn't say WHAT was opening soon.

Is the Phoenix Inn finally re-opening? While the place didn't have the best reputation for Chinese food, it reportedly was Evanston's oldest restaurant in continuous operation, dating back to 1924, until being closed by the fire.

There was also what looked like a building permit in the window, but construction vehicles lined the entire block today, no parking was available, and traffic was all backed up. Unless someone else has more info on this, I'll try to get back and read the fine print in the window.

That's not good. Someone didn't get permits. That's never good.

All of the orange stop work stickers on businesses in my ward and precinct that I see tend to be there for long stretches of time not just days or weeks.

That's curious: The Arby's on Dempster in Morton Grove (just west of Waukegan) closed recently too. And that was only open a year or so after being closed about a year and a half for remodeling. Probably just coincidence, as a quick search of Google News doesn't show anything about mass closures. It did reveal, however, that they're owned by Wendy's, something I didn't know.

And the Journal/Topics paper reports on April 8th of the surprise closing of the Arby's on Oakton, with a sign telling customers to try the one on Dempster mentioned in the above post. Apparently the one on Peterson near Kedzie closed (edited to remove "recently" based on the next poster's comment) too.

That's (not 5 but) 4 Arby's in a short time. I sense some bad news on the 1st quarter financial report for the Wendy's/Arby's company.

The company is undoubtedly cutting back or "consolidating" stores. I wonder if these were franchised locations or company-owned restaurants. It's quite possible that all of these local outlets were owned by the same franchisee, and it's this franchisee (rather than the franchisor) that is having financial difficulties.

saw a big red awning touting "smokey bear's barbeque house" or something to that effect.

the papered-up windows and signs still reflect the previous occupant, an Ecuadorean place that's been closed for maybe a year now. I didn't notice any other signs in the windows on my drive-by.

right next door is another recently opened spot...Bowls and Rolls or something. noodles, rice, maki. Haven't checked it out yet.
