I can hear the tsk, tsking from here but I have to say, I've done this more than once and never suffered any ill effects. Don't know if re-boiling did the trick but no one got sick (least of all me at the thought of throwing away something I'd slaved over for 2 days!!). Don't worry SHFE participants, I'd never secretly serve it to anyone :P

Too overwhelmed to do my usual Derby Day blow-out (and, frankly, I thought it was next week anyway) I did muster up the energy to make up Hot Browns, Grams Cooke's Spoonbread, asparagus, bibb lettuce salad and Derby Pie, which we all enjoyed for dinner tonight. Phew.

I picked up some asparagus, new potatoes, and spring onions at a farmstand outside of Egg Harbor in Hinsdale. I'm going to make an asparagus risotto and a potato spring onion soup.

Stopped at Vallie Produce on the way home from work (I shouldn't shop when I'm hungry) and found something they call Mexican Kale ($.89/lb.). Walked past the bacon, but couldn't get by the fresh chorizo, also on sale.

Saute onion, a little minced garlic, render a sausage link, boil-drain-chop the greens, combine.

What I thought was going to be a side dish turned into my main course - a $2 dinner.

Mother's Day dinner will consist of the following:

Crabtini - Layers of homemade lump meat crab salad and avocado chunks served in a martini glass with a spritz of fresh lemon juice

Four grilled 6oz. lobster tails with garlic butter (2 for her and 2 for me) :D

    Grilled fresh asparagus

    Risotto with porcini mushrooms

No dessert as I doubt we'll have any room. But there are two pints of Ben and Jerry's in the freezer just in case.

    Truly lovely looking meal.

We grilled steak. Was getting late and I was going to pick up from Kow Kow, my 'local' the bride asked for Hong Kong steak, which sounded good. Just as I was about to call for pick up, Kow Kow does not deliver, it occurred to me as I had to go out anyway I may as well buy steak and grill/finish with oyster sauce. Less money, better flavor and I get to play with fire as a bonus.

    Lighting the fire

    Image

Basted the meat with oyster sauce/cane vinegar/fish sauce. Finished with same as it came came off the grill.

    Image

Fresh Farms had choice angus porterhouse on sale for $7.99/lb, served with brown rice and a tomato, green pepper and red onion salad, also made with my new vinegar crush, cane vinegar. Dinner cost less than Chinese takeout, was taster and most likely better for us.

    Enjoy,
