Once I heard of a remedy for headaches, possibly migraines, that involved securing half of a banana peel against the forehead (flesh side against the skin) and another placed the same way across the back of the neck. Has anybody tried this?

Never tried that, but have you tried smoking the banana peels? Mellow Yellow

No, and that sounds like a lot of work. Can't you just scrub the outside, set the peels on fire and inhale?

I think you'd have a better chance of curing a headache by being punched repeatedly in the head than with banana peels. Same goes for getting high.

    Hi,

As evidenced, this forum is not the best place for any medical advice. Comic relief, definitely!

Perhaps if you avoided the bullshit, maybe you would eliminate the resulting headache and not need a remedy at all.

I have heard of rubbing banana peels against your skin to alleviate poison ivy. I suppose if you're unable to find any other remedy, it couldn't hurt to try it. Anymore than it already does. :P

Hmmm. On the other hand, since rubbing poison ivy or stings from nettles with curly dock really does work, maybe replacing the banana with curly dock will make the bullshit headache go away!

On a serious note- there's nothing that hurts worse than a migrane headache (well, maybe childbirth, but I'm not qualified to compare.)

I had occasional migranes for many years, at times I was stressed. NOTHING helped them. Finally, I was told to take a training session in biofeedback to learn to relax. It worked: that was in 1976, and I have never had a migrane since.

Ask for advice. My company health insurance paid for the eight or ten sessions.

My curiosity got the best of me, and in the name of science...

On Saturday, I had a headache. I get headaches a few times a year. Usually only if I drink far too much, or I stay up too late (usually it's both.)
So, on Saturday night, after all the chores / errands were done, dinner was over, and we settled in to a movie (Avatar - which while totally predictable, was still pretty kewl) I decided to hold an experiment with controls.

In my first trial, I placed a banana peel against my forehead for exactly 5 Mississippis.
I then ingested 750 migs of hydrocodone.

Now, we don't know if it was the banana peel or the hydrocodone yet, but within 30 minutes, the headache was not only gone, but I actually had a slight euphoric sensation for a few hours.

So, in my next trial, I'll take the hydrocodone first, THEN do the banana peel thing. Updates to follow...

Finally, something more than popcorn at the movies!

Out of curiosity, I did a quick search and came up with a few research reports that state that banana peels contain high levels of serotonin and potassium, both of which might help a headache, depending on the cause of the headache. However, it may just be the coolness of the peel that helps, because the amount of these nutrients likely to be absorbed through the skin is minimal. A cool compress on the forehead and back of the neck is a common treatment for headaches, as it causes blood vessels to relax (which is why caffeine also helps with many headaches).

One site said that the reason you feel better is that you probably just ate the banana to get the peel, and that's what's making you feel better. That said, there are a few other sites that state that the moist surface on the forehead and back of neck creates some sort of electrical circuit that shorts out the headache. So loads of comments both pro and con on this issue. I guess we'll only know if someone has both a headache and a banana at the same time, and decides to try this.

I've known several people who have successfully ended their headache problems by taking feverfew on a regular basis -- not stopping a headache, but preventing the occurrence of headaches.

That reminds me of the old joke:

So we need someone to remove the banana, heat up the peel to room temperature and try this maneuver. Who's willing to bang their head repeatedly on their desk for science? Next time I naturally have a headache, I've got to try this and report back.
