I've read all the background, and I'm not sure. Do I go to Dinosaur Bar-b-que in Syracuse while I'm there? It'll only be for a day, and I'll probably have to go by myself. Is it worth all the accolades?

To be honest, I haven't had many decent meals on my drives between Chicago and Albany over the last few years, and I'd like to change that. I have taken note of JimInLoganSquare's Egg-Plant experience in Syracuse, and I think I'll try it, and cheerfully share my experiences.

I would love recommendations for anything chowish not far off 90. Especially nice would be something open all night, as we are leaving Chicago at 6 pm to arrive in Syracuse by 6 am. And by all means, if you have anything in Albany (we'll have a few days there), I would be eternally grateful. Because my mother in law doesn't keep salt in the house, and pepper is too exotic a spice for her. She boils anything that she doesn't microwave. Not only can I not eat her cooking, I cannot trust any place she might point me.

The Egg-Plant is actually in East Syracuse. Take I-90 to I-690, get off at the Bridge Street exit and proceed south on Bridge Street.

Was in Syracuse for business and had a chance to eat at Dinosaur, it deserves the accolades. Had a combo plate called Tres Hombres, consists of ample portions of pulled pork, beef brisket and pork ribs.

The pulled pork was a little dry and lacking in flavor, had to smack it with some of their habanero BBQ sauce to wake it up. The brisket was nothing to write home about either. But the ribs - ohmygod. Perfect crusty char with a thin layer of hot, liquified pork fat under the char, and nice chunks of chewy and flavorful pork on the bone. They're cooked with a dry rub, and that's all they need. These ribs were a revelation, I'm still tasting them (belch) four days later. Good slaw and beans on the side too.

If you're in the vicinity it's definitely worth the pilgrimage:

I just ate at Dinosaur BBQ yesterday on a business trip to Syracuse. I had the black bean nachos (good but not a destination trip to get them), the pulled pork plate with mashed potatoes and gravy and shrimp gumbo. The pork was so delicious. BUT THE STANDOUT was the Garlic Chipotle chicken wings. These were the best wings I have ever eaten. They were so meaty and it is apparent that the quality of the chicken can be such a difference maker in the wings. The sauce was delicious. I was disappointed that I did not try other sauces they had. I will definitely return next time I am there on business for some wings.
