D'Amato's move across Grand...

I quickly ran in Bari Market yesterday to pick up a few pounds of Barese sausage yesterday and noticed a building permit in D'Amato's window and a sign saying something to the effect "we're still open across the street". There is in fact a newly opened store across the street.

I was parked illegally, and in a hurry to blanch my rapini and put dinner together, otherwise I would have tried to investigate further. Has anyone heard anything? Doesn't/didn't D'Amato's have just about the last coal fired oven left in Chicago? I remember a recent Tribune article on their coal deliveries. I'll probably investigate further tomorrow. What a shame it wouuld be to lose those great breads.

That sign says "temporarily," which leads me to believe that improvements are being made to the old space and that D'Amato's will reopen there. Just a guess though. I pass by almost daily but before opening, so I haven't been able to inquire.

i was there yesterday and the move is temporary. it's too bad, as the temporary space which is their wholesale space (south side of grand) is much bigger. they arent able to say when they'll move back. as it's no particular inconvenience for customers, i'd say it's no big deal. (their pizza remains my favorite anywhere) justjoan
