You can't go wrong with the salt-baked chicken and the BBQ duck (Pei Par), both from the BBQ menu. You can get small, medium, and large orders, so if your picky dining companion doesn't want any, you can still try it. If you want a vegetable dish--we've had the house-cured bacon with Chinese broccoli several times, and it's excellent (it's listed as a special on the glass). Singapore noodles (mai fun) is another favorite of ours if you want something a bit hot and spicy. Both of these are large, full-sized orders, however. But Sun Wah leftovers are glorious.

Just wanted to give Sun Wah some quick props for something they appear to have struggled with service, on Friday i made a reservation for 3 at 6pm Sat and reserved a duck, called back early Sat morning to increase that 3 to 5 people, in the end 6 showed up, no problem. The place was nearly full at 6 and full when we left, we did some serious over ordering, the food came out promptly and the service was attentive. The highlight aside from the duck, Mikes Chicken, great stuff.

pickled veggies
small salt chicken
small bbq pork w honey
small roast pork

wonderful, delicious crispy skin on the roast pork - salt chicken as good as I had hoped - i could kill some time there!

For ages (AGES!) now, I've been looking forward to a trip to Sun Wah, which has been on list of "to try" forever. It's definitely going to be added to the regular rotation, after a delicious experience last night. There were only two of us, so we couldn't do much damage, but Par Pei Duck, Honey BBQ Pork, Mixed Vegetable Fried Rice, and Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce stood us in good steed. I must say, my expectations were high (and met) for the pork and duck, but I was most pleasantly surprised by the mixed veggie fried rice, which was really well done - full of beautiful spring vegetables, and not overly greasy or soy-sauced, as some fried rice can be!

I'll definitely be back and am really looking forward to exploring more of the menu!

please excuse my having fallen off the face of lth for so long.. ^_^ it's been pretty busy. just wanted to let you all know. we will be closed for vacation this week. so from july 5th through july 12th, there will be no duck, pork, fish, shrimp, or pig in any shape or form at sun wah.. >=) we promise to be open to feed everyone july 13th and will stay open july 22nd instead of being off on our usual thursday. our regular schedule will resume the week of july 26th. thanks for understanding! see you all soon!

Despite what it says here, Sun Wah is not open today*. This has been a public service announcement.

* Kelly did correct herself in a later post, but if you've got ADD and missed that one (like me), don't go today.

First time back in nine months: duck dinner is now $35, though certainly still a value in terms of quality, as we felt the prep--particularly the skin--had never been better. The fried rice has gotten smaller in portion, though sorbet seems to be back in the equation--last night's was an interesting blackberry-ginger concoction. (We went to Paciugo afterward anyway.)

This place is a machine: all tables filled from the moment we arrived until we left. Don't know if this is old news, but they have fancy-schmancy menus now: you have to flip the menu upside-down and start from the back to get to the Hong Kong-style items; the Ameri-chinese and seafood items are on the other side.

One should never go to Sun Wah with merely one dining partner: there are just too many good things on the specials board to try; duck dinners just get in the way.

The groom, teenage son and I had had one of the best dinners we had in a long time. We had the duck of course, but also the oysters and scallops. YUMMY!! Our son (who is picky) almost ate the whole plate of broccoli with oyster sauce. I had to take it away just to get a taste.....lol. Very enjoyable!!! I just wish this place wasn't so far from us...or maybe that's a good thing!

I know i was able order Mike's Chicken without ordering in advance a couple months ago. That said, i'm sure if they get swamped you risk missing out, so ordering ahead is probably still good advice.

My experience with Mike's chicken is that if there is some available, you can order it. If not (and you didn't order in advance), you lose.

I had dinner here last week with my daughter. We had salt and pepper shrimp, roast pork, duck fried rice, and our favorite, the steamed dover sole fillet. An incredible meal as always. Fifille and I are dying to get back for some hot sour soup and beijing duck in the near future.

I had such a good lunch the other day that I felt myself mysteriously drawn to Sun Wah yesterday for some afternoon takeout. Just some bbq pork and pork fried rice, but sooooo good. Accompanied by some buns from Chiu Quon, it was lunch and dinner. Mrs. Trpt who professes not to like Chinese food in general (although she'll go to Phoenix or Lao Sze Schuan anytime) couldn't get enough of the pork. And the doggies got some of the fatty bits, so they were really happy. I don't know why I've been away for so long but Sun Wah is back in heavy rotation. Saves a drive to Chinatown.

Last time we were there, when we called in our reservation we asked if we had to order Mike's Chicken in advance and they said no.

Is Mike's Chicken actually called "Mike's Chicken" on the menu? Or is this another LTH-er menu nickname like "chicken crack" or "the Gary Burger"?

I haven't seen the new menu, but i believe Kelly had corrected LTH by informing us that the proper name was in fact Mike's Chicken and not citrus fried or whatever was used around here.

Don't recall if she corrected LTH as a whole or not, but she certainly corrected me last time we ordered it. And, fwiw, the server knew instantly what I meant in any event.

i'm going to be going to this place for the first time this saturday but only with one other person. i was thinking of pre-ordering the peking duck service but am worried that it'll end up being too much food. plus there wasn't a dinner menu on their website so I couldn't figure out what it included.

should i still go with the duck service or just go there and pick assorted other dishes (like mike's chicken)?

Going to sun wah with 1 person is a dilema as many of the must gets, are large portions, including the duck and mike's chicken. I'd probably get a med bbq combo and 1-2 other dishes and it will still be too much food.

In my experience, duck service is plenty for two, with leftovers. But sometimes the best thing about Sun Wah is leftovers, so you should probably just go for it and whatever else strikes your fancy. You can get small portions, too.

Agreed! I just went for the first time on Saturday, and walked away with three delicious boxes of leftovers. We ate them on Sunday for dinner, and Monday for lunch. I have never had better leftovers...ever.

I can't believe I waited so long to go here; possibly the best LTH rec I've received...and believe me, there are dozens!

The duck service includes the duck/duck skin w/ bao, soup and duck fried rice. It's a lot of food for 2 (too much in my opinion) and I could see where some would view it as one dimensional, but it really is excellent. In my opinion, the main duck course is the real star and I'd be happier if I could just order that portion and skip the soup and rice. You may not have room for anything else, but you could always go back again (make sure to pick up a take-out menu) and in any event, what could be better than Peking duck for breakfast!

The soup is EXCELLENT - add a little of the red vinegar and it just sings. If I am sick, this is what I want to make me well.

My favorite course is the duck fried rice. It works very well reheated in a skillet so you get some nice crunchy bits.

Some friends are in from Boston this week, and I'm going with them to Sun Wah today for lunch. Reports to follow.
