Ocean City itself is a cultural wasteland: dozens of places offering identical hoagies, pizza and burgers at tourist prices.
Just outside of town, technically West Ocean City, is Smoker's BBQ Pit on 611.

Tasty, soft succulent brisket, pork with "red" or carolina vinegar sauce, decent onion rings. Good prices. Skip the chocolate chip cookies listed as "fresh baked" but didn't taste so. They serve breakfast too, but we didn't try it.

    Oh, and birch beer!

    JoelF--

If your way in/out of OCMD includes Bridgeville DE, see if the Lion's Club has their oyster club shack open. If so, buy a bag full. One of the best oyster clubs I've *ever* had. Also note huge Rapa Scrapple statue on way out of town.

In OC, I've eaten with guilty pleasure at Assateague Crab House. Lots of local go there--indeed, have gone there for years--and I just tagged along with them. Sometimes it's awful service; usually it's pretty good food.

Sooo, you like wine and are looking for something good to read? Maybe *this* will do the trick! :)

Wow a BBQ joint that opens at 7am and serves break-fast! Wow...cool! See they have a nice well rounded menu, noticed smoked tuna on the menu too.

Wasn't sure about that place -- no cars lined up, but it was the closest restaurant to Assateague State Park, where we were camping. Highly recommended camping -- best showers I've seen in a campground. Just bring deep tent stakes -- sand plus ocean wind makes for tough tent raising.

    Joel,

FYI - Captain Porky's owner Dino has relatives who run a restaurant there. I don't know the particulars, but if you should head back: inquire with Dino. I remember Dino telling me this relative's seafood costs were higher than his, though they were closer to the ocean.

Are you bringing back a pony?

Not enough space in the car.

We almost brought back a couple of catbirds that decided to have dinner in the car when we left the hatchback open during the meal. They didn't quite get into a loaf of bread, but were working on it.

The horses obviously have experience with campers: during the night, two dining fly tents in the same camping section were torn open by food-seeking equines.
