I did a search but it appears that Bennison's doesn't have a dedicated topic. It's a great all-around bakery that does many things well, but I wanted to especially highlight this new item, the maple-bacon longjohn. I believe it's inspired by VooDoo Donuts in Portland. Had one this morning before heading over to the Evanston Farmer's Market and it was just excellent. Good crisp-cooked smoky bacon, a really nice maple frosting, and a solid freshly prepared donut.

Worth driving out of your way for. At $2, they're not cheap, but what worthwhile indulgence is?

Whoah indeed! My friends in Northern California have a donut shop that sells maple bacon donuts. I'd say this is like a cousin to that regular round donut. May have to visit there one time when I visit my mom in Skokie. :)

Thanks for the find...will definitely check it out! :)

some local donuteer either used to or still does sell a maple bacon donut at Cassie's Green Grocer. IIRC, the tiny thing was $3 and sickly sweet.

My buddy brought some maple bacon doughnuts from Bleeding Heart Bakery to Dark Lord Day this year. They went very nicely with my breakfast ale and with some Coffee Bourbon County Stout. :)

YES, it is indeed Dynamo Donuts. He posted a picture and I was like O_O In any case, I wanna go visit Bennison's Bakery and get that Maple-Bacon Longjohn of theirs so I can flaunt it at my friend in NorCal. ^_^ Should be amusing!

The Maple Bacon Bar at Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, OR has always reigned as my favorite. To find something as good as that, within driving distance, would be a dream come true.

The concept of a maple-bacon bar is too good to pass up (even though it feels like trend-riding now), but the voodoo doughnut version was so tooth-achingly sweet that I haven't been able to get even halfway through it the two times I've tried it. Definitely swinging by Bennison's, even though I've been let down by some of their other goods (it feels like more of a decent neighborhood place than any kind of a destination).

not sure, but that sounds like exactly the way Cassie described the maker. I doubt there could be 2 of these kinds of places in town. Honestly, one seems more than enough.

I loved the maple bacon donut at Dynamo Donuts, which I recall being around $3. I was really surprised to see a whole strip of bacon on Bennison's! Hope this one holds up well to my fond memories.

I was very disappointed by Voodoo's doughnuts overall. Everything looked so good, and yet all of the doughnuts were too sweet, stale, and the bacon on the maple bar tasted burnt and old. Definitely not worth the long, long wait we endured. The experience was so crappy that I passed on Bennison's version, much as I love maple and bacon, as the mere sight of it reminded me of the nasty taste I was scrubbing out of my mouth for hours afterwards.

But perhaps I should dare...it sounds as if their version is a touch better.

I'll always try something ONCE. You know the old saying 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.' :) Though I have to wonder how easy it is to eat the maple bacon long john because the bacon would have to be crispy and easy to break with one bite. If I have to tear it off with my teeth then that'd probably be a big deciding factor on getting the maple bacon long john a second time....nevermind the flavor. :)

I just called Bennison's to see if they had any left and they told me that they only make the Bacon Maple Longjohns Wednesday thru Saturday. I'm not much of a fan of their pastries in general, but I do want to try one of these for the novelty.

I was there Saturday morning and they also have long johns sprinkled liberally with Trix cereal on white frosted ones and golden grahams sprinkled on maple frosted ones.

As a pregnant lady, you all are killing me with this thread. Any thoughts on where I can get a good maple frosted donut in the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area? I'm thinking Dinkel's, but I cannot remember if they have those.

I can supply my own bacon.

As a fellow pregnant lady, I sympathize.

I have been really into the caramel donut from the Swedish Bakery in Andersonville. Granted, it's not maple (though the caramel frosting does satisfy the maple urge, for me) and it's also not in Lakeview or Lincoln Park - but it's totally worth it. I have one a week.
