I'm looking for a asian or chinese grocery somewhere on the northside (I'm in Lakeview/North Center). I'm trying to make this pork belly recipe http://thepauperedchef.com/2009/12/red-braised-pork-belly-and-a-sichuan-cooking-primer.html and there are a few items I think I might be able to find at an asian grocery. First and foremost being the pork belly. I know some of the butcher shops in the city will get pork belly if you call ahead and order it but I'd like to make it this weekend.

So where can I go, I'm willing to drive 15-20 minutes or so but would prefer not to go all the way out to the suburbs. Is there somewhere good to go on Argyle? What are the good places to go in Chinatown?

    For starters:

    Tai Nam 4925 N Broadway 773-275-5666

    Viet Hoa 1051 W Argyle 773-334-1028

    Broadway Supermarket 4879 N Broadway 773-334-3838

I've bought pork belly at all of these places.

If you need a whole pork belly, the best place imho is Peoria Packers 1300 W Lake St 312-738-1800

I'm a fan of Chicago Food Corporation, 3333 North Kimball Ave. Big store that carries everything, all at good prices. The produce and meat sections have especially fresh stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions - the Szechaun braised pork belly was a major success. A few quick thoughts on my travels:

I went to Chicago Food Corp first b/c it was the closest option. It is pretty hectic in there. The aisles are tiny and it's packed. Taking a grocery cart is not advisable as it takes forever to move around the store and navigate around people. They did have whole pieces of pork belly with the skin on, although it was listed as "bacon" but I was able to determine that it was just raw pork belly. They didn't have, or possibly more accurately stated, I couldn't find everything I was looking for, so I decided to make a roadtrip up to Broadway Supermarket.

Broadway was huge relative to CFC and much less crowded. The selection seemed much more broad and Broadway. They had pork belly there as well, although it appeared to be only skin on and with bones. Huge selection of spices, soy sauce, etc.

Really enjoyed a side trip to Viet Hoa today. Needed to replenish my fish sauce, shark sriracha(if you think you like rooster sriracha with all its chemical additives, give all natural shark a try), chinese noodle, geen tea, shrimp flavored chips, and some Yan Yan's for my daughter.

also checked out their produce, meat, and seafood, looked good, but I wasnt equiped with a cooler to transport any back out west.

I have to find a pork belly now.
Anyone know where near Oak Park to get one? I'm thinking the Mexican Grocery on North Ave. might be worth a shot.
