I haven't been to Simon Lin. I have met him through his Highland Park restaurant. He's the type who hovers over the table inquiring if you liked what you just put in your mouth. He wants feedback on everything, which I find cloying. If his restaurant is busy, then maybe he is too busy to do this. At the Highland Park outpost, it wasn't always busy so he hovered over the table.

Route 22 cuts through Lincolnshire, which if you follow it west and just past 83, you will be at Karma. I passed there last night and thought of this query. I haven't been, though I am quite curious about it.

I went to Karma a few years ago, shortly after they opened. I thought the food was okay, nothing great, and was quite expensive. However, the room is beautiful, so if you're willing to pay more for a nice environment, you might like it. It's worth trying, if you live in the Mundelein area. Another decent place in Mundelein is Dover Straits, for seafood. The Tavern in Libertyville is also excellent. But those places are a good 10-15 minutes from Lincolnshire.

As for places right in Lincolnshire, there's Walker Brothers for breakfast/lunch/brunch; don't miss the apple pancake! I've been to Flatlander's, an okay American bar-grill type place. I've been to Kona Grill, a pseudo-Hawaiian chain, and was underwhelmed. Also to Wildfire, the LEY steakhouse, always reliable and consistent, probably my top choice in that area. I haven't been to Fleming's, another chain steakhouse. And there's a Cheesecake Factory (which is a chain I happen to like, although I haven't been to that location). Some years ago I went to Gilardi's and liked it; it's now called Philly G's (still the Gilardi family, I think). I haven't been to Simon Lin.

Bottom line, if I need to dine in Lincolnshire, I'd hit Walker Brothers for breakfast, Wildfire for dinner (although I'd also try Philly G's), and for lunch it depends on what I'm in the mood for - any of these or maybe Cheesecake Factory.

Just to clarify Cathy's post - you'll need to take Route 45 west from Milwaukee Ave, not Route 22. Karma is in the Crowne Plaza in Mundelein.

Being a local, I just go without much thinking. I just checked a map to find from 41 and the tollway, it is 22 that will take you west.

Just before Milwaukee Avenue, there is a traffic light for Old Half Day Road (see Lincolnshire Police station) that acts like a spur that brings you to 45.

If you miss this spur, no big deal. When you get to Milwaukee Avenue, turn right. Next traffic light turn left onto 45. Milwaukee Avenue south of this intersection is both 45 and 21).

Just to further clarify Dave's post - US 45 runs mostly north and south (never east and west) and is marked as US 45 North and US 45 South. US 45 is Milwaukee Avenue from Prospect Heights (just south of Palwaukee Airport) to Lincolnshire just north of Half Day Road (IL 22). Where it splits off there, just north of Half Day, it heads to the northwest and you want to follow signs for US 45 North. You will immediately pass Philly G's on the right, go a few miles, you'll pass Dover Straits on the right, and you'll then see the Crowne Plaza on the right.

There are lots of good restaurants in towns not far from Lincolnshire. In addition to the ones previously mentioned in Mundelein/Libertyville to the north, there are quite a few good ones in Deerfield and Highland Park to the east, and in Wheeling to the south. If you do a search on these forums, you'll find numerous recommendations in those towns.

A little further south by Aptakisic and Milwaukee,
we have eaten several times at Kona Grill, and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I know it is a chain, but I have found the cooked food and the sushi quite good,
and I like it especially for dessert after the movies as they have small reasonalbly priced portions
when you don't want to eat the mountain of cheesecake next door, nor
do you want to wait forever for a table or listen to all that noise.
(I must be getting old...)

We often happy hour in Lincolnshire

Kona Grill has incredibly priced drink and food specials in the bar area during Happy Hour, until 7.
The Sliders and Lettuce Wraps are the standouts, there's also plenty of $3 Maki Rolls.
Plus once again after 9pm Happy Hour prices come back. (sometimes our happy hour runs a little long )

Also in the same plaza is a Flemings, with the great $6 Bacon Cheeseburger on a Pretzel Roll during Happy Hour. (Part of their 5 for $6 until 7 deal) The 5 stands for both apps and martinis.

Hi. Just started a project that will have me in Lincolnshire for a few months. I'm right on Milwaukee Avenue a short way north of the Cheesecake Factory area. I normally work in Northbrook, so I'm pretty familiar with lunchy type spots south of here, but most of those spots would stretch my lunch hour a little longer than I'd like it to be. I'm familiar with Wonton Express around here, but not much else. I see a bunch of chains that I'm not terribly familiar with like Red Robin, and Kona Grill close by, and I'm wondering if that's pretty much it? Anyplace to get a good sammich, or is Potbelly my only game? I think Wonton Express covers my needs for Chinese food, any other notable ethnic eats around here? Also, I essentially have NO idea what is north of here. Anything of interest? Any particularly good lunch values? I'll probably get to try all of these chain places at least once, but hoping to find a little gem somewhere as well. I'll start reading thru the few threads.

Good food and a nice beer selection. I had a good soft shell crab sandwich last time I was there.

I work in the Hewitt office which is right next door. If I go out for lunch and want something cheap and quick (and trying to avoid the usually Micky D's, Burger King, Wendy's which is all near by), there's Bobo's for gyros/hamburger joint, Subway, Panera in that strip mall as wonton express, Culver's a little bit further out, Pastabilities if you're looking for cheap pasta, Pita Inn out in deerfield.

If you drive up NW on Milwaukee, you'll eventually hit Hawthorne mall by Town Line Road, with a large number of lunch options, KFC with a lunch buffet, On the Border, food court in the mall, Green Basil for Thai, Portillos, El famous burrito next to the comedy club, and a number of other places.

There are also Bob Chin's Crabhouse and Superdawg on Milwaukee Ave.; Pita Inn, I Am Siam, and Dengeos (gyros, Italian beef) on/near Dundee in Wheeling; Malnat's at Lake-Cook/Buffalo Grove Road in Buffalo Grove; and Wolfy's on Dundee at Sanders in Northbrook.

Um, I'm oddly compelled by this KFC with a lunch buffet. Is it as absolutely atrocious as it sounds? (And I mean that in a good way - sometimes, I'm all about the gross food!)

Green Basil - what's the draw here? Anything done well?

Also, I'm a frequent flier at PIta Inn. Is Roti just gonna piss me off? Six fitty for a falafel sammich?

Both are above average for the area. I don't know how Blue House would compare to any in the city but Sushi Kushi can hold its own against just about any place.

If you're in the mood for a solid hot dog joint, you're probably less than 10 minutes away from Wiener Take All. They have great fries, though I've certainly had off-batches that veered toward soggy. The place is bustling at lunchtime but the staff is efficient and the owner always friendly.

Well, I tried to psyche myself up and hit that KFC buffet, but my smarter side won out. I had my very first Red Robin experience today. Glad I got that outta the way. Don't need to go back for another lifetime. Saffron for Indian buffet is next, methinks.

I actually read the bldg signs as I pulled in today. I'm in a building with a sign that says Hewitt. Overlook Point or some such. Decent sized pond between the bldg and Milwaukee ave. I'm thinkin maybe I bring the ol fishin pole and a sammich one day for lunch!

If you want to fight a little traffic and go into Libertyville, there's a new Five Guys at Libertyville Square (119 N Milwaukee).

Tuesdays, Morgan's Bar in downtown Libertyville has an absolutely awesome deal: 2.50 cheeseburgers, and they're darn good.

Closer to you, I like a little Italian place, La Rosa's, in a strip mall at the corner of Milwaukee and Half Day Rd. Good pizza, but even better lunch deals. I usually get the breast of Chicken Vesuvio. Something like 7.00 or so; huge portion of chicken and potato wedges covered in garlic, soup or salad, warm Italian bread.

I braved the KFC buffet today. Its actually not a bad deal at all, $5.49 for all you can eat chicken and the usual fixings. Also includes a salad bar, but no drink. Buffet times go from 11AM to 8PM.

Pine Garden Korean Restaurant is also very good.

I didn't check a map first, so I passed by this Woodlands Commons mall place, go to 83, and turned back around because
I saw the Michael's in the mall, and figured, the Tacos El Norte might be in the same mall. If it wasn't, then I could at least hit up Micheal's. Well, no Tacos El Norte, so I wandered into Michael's. Maybe it's just me, I dunno. The first thing I saw on the menu was the list of "Meal Deals."

Beef sammich, fries, and a 22oz drink. $9.17.

I emptily scanned the rest of the menu knowing full well I was not staying there unless there was some other specials board, maybe a daily special or something. I think I'd only spend ten bux for a beef, fries and a drink if my father told me it was worth it. Even then, I might start looking for nursing homes in the area. Can anyone vouch for this place having the very best hot dogs / beef / gyros in the entire nation?

Pizza Puff - $3.69. I'm not in Kansas anymore, I guess.

I had a flavorless burger combo meal at Wendy's instead.

The Tacos Al Norte used to be next to the Michaels in this strip mall, but they have been closed now for roughly a year or so. I agree Michaels is overpriced. If you're looking for something like Michaels, check out Bobo's...7.48 for the same beef sammich meal, not cheap, but cheap-er at least...plus they serve green river soda.

Add some "Hot" giardiniera to that meal "deal," and you're $8.98 out the door. The beef sammich itself was respectable for that thick cut style - I'm a bigger fan of the shaved style tho. The price tag, however, is still making me think it's a shame. Wolfy's beef w/ hot over there on Saunders a hair south of Dundee was worlds better (for that kind of price tag.) It seems that the beef / dog stands have a firm grasp of these northern burbers by the short n curlies. If the Michael's product is the exact same, then if someone had enough land to open a small beef joint on the cheap up this way, riches are all but guaranteed.
