    Taking a run to Baylor's on South Halsted for watermelon, then a donut or fritter at OFD. Where else should we make a stop to eat and or buy something to take home. The ride takes a while so I would like to find other new and interesting things in that area or on the way back to western suburbs.

    Thanks

    Drop by my place on your way back to the western burbs for something interesting. I'll show you a great way to cut a watermelon, and also a magic trick I like to call, "The disappearing fritter."

    I'm not sure what a "blog crime" is, but I do think that anyone who makes a perfectly innocent person think that "watermelon donuts" exist should answer for it in The Hague. :x

    P.S.: Agree with Calumet Fisheries and Jimmy Jamm's, but this year's melon experiences have so far been underwhelming (my own included). See the Shopping forum.

    Maybe not so far fetched as Dunkin Donuts and others have had honeydew donuts on offer for years.

    Hi,

    Just before the 4th of July last year, there was a LTH Caravan down there. You may want to follow their leader: viewtopic.php?p=265391#p265391

    Or at least it is inspiring!

    Watermelon donuts sounds like the kind of thing that OFD might have. Perhaps this thread will inspire them.

    Yes, I too was hoping for donuts made with/of/from watermelon.

    Sigh.

    How would one go about making a watermelon doughnut? Hopefully it would be something more than just watermelon flavored icing. It seems it would be difficult to make a watermelon fritter due to the high moisture content in watermelon. It would be cool to make doughnuts with moist bits of melon embedded in them, or melon filled donuts, but how would you keep them from geting soggy (plus the texture might be weird)? I suppose one could make a watermelon jelly and use that to fill the pastries. Is it even possible to make watermelon jelly?

    edit: I found plenty of recipes for watermelon jelly on the intertubes. That alone sounds kind of interesting. Maybe I will try making some when the melons get a little sweeter.

    It sounds like a challenge for Gus (Wiener and Still Champion): a hamburger in between two slices of watermelon. It couldn't be any harder to eat than a Luther Burger, and healthier too. :lol:

    Not any healthier once the inevitable happens: Gus batters and deep fries the whole thing.

    All right you got me. Punctuation does serve a purpose. Mr. Langenderfer would be very disappointed in me. Although not part of the Twitter generation, I may have been trying to fit in and be cool. (oops using "cool" might exclude me from the sought after group) {do I need another period here, or should I have refrained from the earlier use after the word "cool"?}

    Donuts were outstanding. The chef de fryer spoke up, correcting the salesperson, as to the eta for fritters. Definitely worth the five minute wait. Glazed and chocolate covered devil's food cake donuts two minutes out of the freezer are a new taste sensation for me. I can buy two dozen now. We bought eight watermelons at about a four dollar a melon discount. They were not the best I have ever eaten, but better than the local supermarket. Top Notch on the way home was a great treat. Best griddle burger I have had in a long time, juicy and not overcooked.

    Thanks for the info and the lesson from Strunk's Elements of Style.

    Does anyone know when the watermelons are out? Will they be good this weekend, already?
