Having just spent a delightful long lunch with Josh, I can attest to the fact that he is unlikely to ever pay a visit to Sushi X, even if the restaurant paid him to eat there.

It's an abomination that must be stopped!

A couple of thse rolls sound like they would make for a decent sandwich. Maybe BYOB (bread), unwrap the maki's and spread the fillings on your bread. Bonus points of you ask them to toast the bread for you.

Dave, if you go - we expect photos of the five-O roll.

Another that piques my interest in an "gross, but I'd try it if it was free" sort of way:
Lava: spicy tuna, cream cheese, green onion, eel sauce, no rice, entire roll tempura

I think I'm going to make normal California Rolls for dinner...

That's what I'm talking about! The contents of that roll on a good fresh NYB&B bagel sound pretty good to me. As a maki, not so much.

It's quite convenient for me to swing by NYB&B on the way down. Will they be offended if I walk in with a brown paper bag tucked under my coat?

I think you should check it out for yourself. No, it's not traditional sushi, but that's not what they're going for.

Call to check, but usually all rolls are half off Mon - Thurs from 5 - 7 pm. Also, they're BYOB and there's a CVS nearby.

Personally, I've eaten sushi all over the world, including the fish markets in Japan, and I enjoy Sushi X on a regular basis. My personal favorite is the Godzilla roll.

Now that I've re-looked at the web site, perhaps it is only carry-out & delivery. That changes my plan of attack.
I'd have to spread the product on my NYB&B on my lap in my car.

Although it's obvious to me why this place wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, I'm glad a place like Sushi X exists, if for no other reason to offer something completely different maki-wise... I used to frequent sushi-x many times and was always pleased with the huge size of the rolls and very creative combinations. I've since forgotten about this place thanks to the ridiculous all you can eat option that includes hot/cold app and entries sundays at Ai, but I have fond memories of Sushi X and will stop by soon to sample their new maki and report back.
I'm not picky, I just have more tastebuds than you... ; )

Give the Reader readers some credit, at least they are consistent - Marigold being the city's best Indian while Sultan's Market takes the Middle Eastern crown. For chrissakes people.

Well, that's probably why there's sixteen pages of non-democratically chosen expert's choices that follow the reader poll results, written by, well, a few folks you may have heard of.

For instance, here's a little savvier take on Japanese than the above...

Mike, your post caused me to go back and do a new "test run" of the Reader's restaurant guide. It seems like they made it better again. My (subjective) impression was that after being pretty useful for a number of years, it became much more Yelp-like and nothing better than that. But now I'm seeing more trustworthy paragraphs in the random test I just did. Glad you posted that.

Reader's polls (for any publication) were ever thus; they might as well call them "Best of Wicker Park." I was always amazed to learn that Sultan's Market was the best middle-eastern restaurant in Chicago, hell, probably the whole world.
