Not exactly sure how it came about but we are going with 3 other families to Brown County Indiana over the long holiday weekend. The thought of chains and fast food for 4 days makes me weak.

ANY suggestions for decent (acceptable?) places IN Brown County or along the way between Chicago and Nashville IN? Mapquest has us taking the Skyway through town to I-65 but I'd be willing to follow an alternate route if it's worthwhile.

    Thanks!

    HI,

While not a direct answer, it is certainly a resource:

Cafe Indiana: A Guide to Indiana's Down-Home Cafes
    Joanne Raetz Stuttgen

This book is not organized by county, it is organized by regions and town names. I did not see anything for Nashville, IN, though that does not mean there is something nearby or along the way.

If you cannot locate a copy, I have one you can borrow to look through.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Story Inn for breakfast and Zaharakos for lunch.

Story Inn also serves lunch and dinner, but I've only had breakfast there. I can vouch for the Biscuits 'n Gravy and the "Best Ever Egg Sandwich." The food is simple, but exceptionally well-prepared. My guess is the lunch and dinners almost as good. There seems to be a decent emphasis on local food, but not to the exclusion of some decidedly non-local options.

Zaharakos has been praised by many on this board (see link above), on roadfood.com and elsewhere on the interwebs. The food there isn't going to blow anyone away, but the ambiance can't be beat.

Bloomington is 15 miles west of Nashville and has some good places to eat, especially this Burmese spot that Antonius and I loved when we visited a few weeks ago:

Since it's the holiday weekend, you should of course call before heading out to confirm that any of these places will be open.

I haven't been there for 10 years, but I remember loving Story Inn. I still sometimes daydream about their apple butter and biscuits.

I spent two summers working the Brown County Playhouse when I was a theatre major at IU in Bloomington. I have very fond memories of Miller's Ice Cream. I can't come up with specifics but I do remember getting myself many a cone during my lighting crew duties.

I think you'll find Brown County not only beautiful and restful but quaint and sweet. I think your food options will be more mom and pop than you think -- BC is pretty tiny.

Bloomington has great food -- and the campus is very pretty. A side trip or two would be fun. And don't forget to see what's playing at the Playhouse!
