I remember stopping somewhere along I-16, which runs from Macon to Savannah, at a place called Jay's Dairy Park, in 1983. On the curb outside the front door was a 50-pound bag of Vidalia onions. My wife nixed the idea of toting the load back to NW Indiana. That was a good decision because sweet, or short-day, onions like Vidalias are not keepers.
Now I live about 30 miles from Vidalia, so supply is not a problem. Also, the new warehouses with controlled atmospheres are able to store them from season-to-season.
But I know my kid wasn't going to eat onion if Mickey Mouse was imprinted on it. He still doesn't and he's 29 now.
