As a former Chicagoan, I remember the wonderful bakeries all over the city. We all have our favorites, but for the most part, it's hard to find a bad bakery in the Chicago area.
Every time I visit, I go to my favorite bakery (Jarosh Bakery) in Elk Grove Village. Fifty dollars later I leave with my favorite cake, my favorite coffee cake, and my favorite cookies. I would buy more, but I can only buy what will fit in my carryon bag when I get on the airplane to go home.
Jarosh uses a wonderful chocolate fudge icing and a mouth watering buttercream filling. The fudge icing seems to be one that other bakeries in Chicago use, so I don't think Jarosch actually makes it. I could be wrong, but I have found, after living in 3 states other than Illinois that the icing on cakes in the Chicago area can't be found on a cake anyplace else. I've never had chocolate fudge icing or buttercream filling that can compare to Chicago. The icings in Chicago are very distinctive. I have given up buying bakery cakes completely unless I buy them in Chicago. The cakes in other places just can't compare.
Jarosch Bakery will now ship out of state, but they don't ship their cakes, for obvious reasons.
So ... For those times when I can't get to Chicago, and I just HAVE to have something that resembles a cake from Chicago, I am trying to find out either how they make their icing or where they purchase it.
I've tried so many recipes hoping I could duplicate what they have. Nothing even comes close.
It's bad enough that I have to live without good pizza, good hot dogs, and Italian beef, but living without the wonderful Chicago baked goods is enough to push me over the edge.
Anyone have any ideas on how the icings can be duplicated or where they can be purchased?
Thanks for helping.
