There is a butcher in Wasco and another in Elburn not too far apart. I went to the one in Elburn and purchased some of the award winning brats, which were excellent.

Has anyone has their steaks? How is the quality? I called the Wasco butcher - choice grade meat, $22.95/lb. I believe the Elburn market is $19.99/lb but I forget the grade. Choice comes to mind, iirc.

I also happened to call Major Meats in Geneva, IL and the guy said he'd sell whole pieces of choice filet mignon for $9.25/lb, average 7 pounds.

He recommended Joseph Butchers in Geneva on Route 38 (I'd have to imagine it is a client of his). He did not know the price, but it would be choice grade. Anyone know this place?

Any opinions on other local butchers would be great. I live in South Elgin.

I've been to Johnny G's in Bloomingdale, it was great and I think $16.95/lb (a few years ago) and it was a minimum of prime grade beef, IIRC.

Christine... I haven't been to Majors, but I have tried the place in Wasco, Joseph's and Reams in Elburn.

The shop in Wasco had nice looking meats, but i was there for one thing... A bone-in rib roast. They told me that bone-in rib roasts were special order... Never heard that before.

Reams in Elburn is a great place. I've never had anything from there that I didn't like.

Josephs has a nice selection of sausages and deli meats. I've never bought freash meat from them.

My favorite place in the western 'burbs is the Wheaton Meat Market (310 S. Main St, in Wheaton, of course). They have great meats and sausages. Their specialty is a marinated tri-tip that they call a London Broil. Great on the grill.

If you live in South Elgin, you're not far from my favorite butcher. We live in the Wheaton/Winfield area and go up to Lake in the Hills for our meat. Give them a try. Homemade brats and sausages; everything is good! He's got Boar's Head deli stuff and top quality meat.

I'm curious about Major Meats as the address is in a residental area. Of the others, I prefer Reams, they have been around a long time and have no trouble with special cuts or requests.

Out of curiosity I went looking for Major Meats and found only houses on that street. They also had a listing in Batavia on a residental street so I think they probably are brokers/purveyors and supply others.

    LTEO,

Yes, he is a broker and as such would only sell me a whole tenerloin not individual cuts. I apoligize if I was not clear in my initial post. I had no idea it was all residential, however...

I'm sure we'll try them all. And I will happily report back!

Hmmm, I looked on mapquest to see how far Elborn is from me -- a mere 57 miles. Does anyone know where I could buy brats closer to the Old Town area? Within city limits of Chicago would be a lot closer. I'm open to suggestions.

Well I'm not at all familiar with Old Town but walking distance from me is Meyer's Delicatessen in Lincoln Square. They have a wonderful array of sausage offerings - fresh, cooked, and cured, as well as lots of other great stuff that I always find hard to pass up. They have at least 4 or 5 varieties of bratwurst and I can't go in there without buying some of those terrific bockwurst - they are like popcorn in that you just can't stop eating them.

Gepperth's on Halsted has regular brats and lamb brats, and both are quite good. Especially the lamb.

You can find brats at pretty much any grocery store, too, in my experience.

I do know that most grocery stores carry Johnsonville brats and such. I was going to buy 150 brats from The Brat Stop in Kenosha, Wisconsin. You can buy them freshly made there. It is nice because the quality is high and the cost is pretty low. However, it is an hour drive there. WAIT Hey, I called Delicatessen Meyer. They sound great! I may call the other place just to check it out, too! Thanks for the advice!

    Mary,

Brat Stop, which is one of my favorite stops, along with Bobby Nelson's, on the drive back from Milwaukee, no longer makes their own brats. Brat Stop sells, and serves, Usinger products.
