Just asked my girlfriends father for her hand in marriage. Didn't get the response I was hoping for.

    Macallan 12 year. Neat.

sorry dude, maybe its just a snag and i hope things get better in time. anyway, anyone try this:

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Islay Malt

is it good? its the cheapest Laphroaig @ $39.99 and i got a Binny's coupon for any spirit... is there another scotch that's better at that price?

I really like Balvenie's 12 Year Doublewood...that's usually in the $40 neighborhood. I don't particularly care for Laphroaig.

The Doublewood is very good, it is in the mid 40's at Binnys, and at that price I actually prefer the Springbank 10.

As far as the Laphroaig goes, I just generally find them to be very smokey/peaty, and I don't like that; alot of people supposedly do. I have my doubts, I think it is like people that say they like the newest "Sextuple IPA", I think it is a "I'm cooler than you" thing I just don't get.

I think Highland Park 12 is around that price and I think it's one of the finest whiskies out there. It's a heavier malt with a fair amount of peat but much more balanced than Laphroaig. You could always swing by the Clark St. Ale House and try a glass of each to help you decide!

I have to agree, when in doubt go find somewhere to try it. You will pay more per oz, but it is still cheaper than the bottle.

Ardbeg 10 is another very good value in this price range. It has a very smoky, peaty finish. I prefer it to the Laphroaig 10. It benefits from adding a bit of water to the glass.

Tonight is the rum I was expecting yesterday:

Ron Zacapa XO Centerario Solera Gran Reserva Especial

    or

    Ron Zacapa XO for short.

    Ymmm.

While I love the Ron Zacapa 23, I have always found it to be a little sweet. The XO has a little extra age on it, in yet another used barrel; the finish is a little drier. A most excellent sipping rum

Glad you like it...if you're not above mixing with single malts, it makes a terrific Rob Roy. The Balvenie 21 (Port Wood) is my favorite sipping scotch...sadly it's tripled in price since I bought my first bottle...now $180 at Binny's.

I do like IPAs and Belgian ales both :)--and I have a bottle of Laphroaig at home. I'm not the biggest scotch drinker, and I've had the bottle for about 2 years, but every once in a while when I want to have 1 drink of whiskey and have that be my only drink of the night, Laphroaig is what I reach for. So I guess basically it lived up to the review my more scotch-savvy friend wrote for me when I asked him what scotches he was interested in at the time:

Laphroig tastes extremely strongly of peat and smoke, because it's made with a lot of smoked peat. Neat! I actually think it tastes a whole lot like Turpentine, but I have fond memories of oil painting classes, so I'm kinda into that. It's definitely far from the taste of bourbon (or just about anything else that's considered edible), but I think that's what people like about it; there's absolutely no other food or drink that tastes like Laphroig. I'd say it's a good one to have around for once-in-a-while occasions, like having a poker night where you can shout at a dude, "Put down that bottle of Jack Daniels, you fucker, why don't you try some REAL WHISKY". It's not a subtle flavor.

Laphroig tastes like a conversation with:

mhill - sorry to hear you're off IPA's nowadays as I just had one over the weekend I was planning to post about. Maybe you can fit one more in if you haven't tried this one already

Since I reside in central Illinois, we often experience a delay in the arrival of beers that Chicagoans have been enjoying for a while. I hadn't seen anything posted on this particular brew - Sierra Nevada Torpedo - an in-your-face Extra IPA. I compare Torpedo favorably to my new all-time favorite IPA by O'Dells which has an aroma of hops that is unparalleled IMO. Torpedo is even more hoppy on the tongue (but not in aroma, which I found odd) and not quite as well balanced as O'Dells, also IMO.

I enjoyed three bottles of this heady Torpedo brew with a good cigar before hoisting the white flag and giving the remainder of the sixer to a fellow hop-head.

    Cheers,

Recent converts to belgians might be most interested in this upcoming event at Goose Island's Clybourn location on Saturday, August 28:

    Belgian Fest
We had such a great time with Stout Fest in March that we just couldn't wait until next year to have another festival! We've come together with other Chicagoland breweries and their brewers to host Belgian Fest 2010.

    Participating Breweries:

    Destihl Brew Works
    Goose Island Beer Co.
    Half Acre Beer Co.
    Piece Brewery
    Revolution Brewing
    Rock Bottom Chicago
    Rock Bottom Warrenville
    Rock Bottom Yorktown
    The Lucky Monk
    Three Floyds Brewing

    -20 beer tickets
-MBA members get in an hour early
-Brewers will be on hand pouring and discussing their fine hand-crafted ales.
    -RSVP required. 312.915.0071
    - Noon to 5pm

More than anything, I'm surprised they finally found a way to reward MBA holders (though I don't know if that means MBA holders get in at 11am or 'regular' admission starts at 1pm...).

ETA: time for the event and note re same

excellent info D! i will definetely try and it make it out there...

on another note, we went through the bottle of 10 year LaPhroiag and I have to say that the Balvenie's was much more enjoyable. not to say that the LaPhroiag wasn't drinkable... it went down easy, but you always had that sort of campfire flavor from the smoke & peat throughout. if i had to use a word to describe/rate LaPhroiag , i would use the word "interesting." :)

Please chew on lump charcoal instead; briquettes use too much filler. We do have standards here ;)

    - New Glarus Spotted cow drafts
    - Don Julio Reposado

    - a few glasses of Basil Haydens
    - New Glarus Dancing Man wheat bottles
    - High Lifes

Basil Haydens may be the business traveler's best friend. It frequently shows up on receipts as "Basil H" or "Basil"...which is about as innocuous as drinks get for the expense report.
