Sorry to go off topic, but does that mean Bombon in Pilsen is closed or open?

Edit: I reread that piece. BomBon's original location on 18th Street was consumed in a fire a few years ago. They have other locations, though who knows if they will rebuild on 18th St.

Without making any phone call, I will venture to guess this is an expansion.

Same here. I knew about the Ogilvie location from a co-worker. Not updating their web site has probably cost them $100 of cake business from me since the fire, as evening parking around the Ashland/Monroe location is rather tricky.

    So exciting!
In the old Joe Box Grill space (3918 Touhy Ave.), there's work being done inside and a sign on the window that says Pita Inn Out. I sure hope that means what I think it means!

In a quick drive-by the mall with the now defunct Sandwich Works (still empty) and New York Bagel & Bialy, I saw a papered-over space with a sign that read: im Thai Kitchen coming soon!

    From the Nadig Press:
Thai cuisine chef Arun Sampanthavivat presented plans for te multi-use Thai Town Center he plans to create in the former 17th (Albany Park) District police station at 4461 N. Pulaski Rd...The chef and other investors are planning to use that old station for Thai-influenced retail and nonprofit uses, including a restaurant that als would sell packaged food, a spa, a wellness center and office space for the Thai American Association of Illinois...using materials to create a Thai-influenced look...plans also call for installing...a porch for outdoor seating...rooftop garden...restaurant would be moderately priced after some residents...complained that Arun's has an expensive menu.

Also, not sure if this has been reported or not, but there is a newish deli that opened up next to the Forest View Bakery at 6452 N. Milwaukee.

Not sure if this qualifies as a "closing", since it never really opened, but the property on Dempster in Morton Grove where Lochner's Nursery used to be, where Pequod's was supposed to relocate to, is now up for sale.

Terrible news. Although this restaurant was totally wrong for the neighborhood they were putting out some pretty great food. They certainly deserved more LTH love.

I noticed the (relatively) new Andy's Frozen Custard in Evanston the other day and stopped in for a taste. Since I was on my way to lunch, I limited myself to a small vanilla cone. Having eaten plenty of Kopp's and Leon's custard, I thought Andy's product compares pretty favorably. Maybe not as eggy as Kopp's, but certainly richer-tasting than say, Culver's. The counter person explained that Andy's recipe was developed with the assistance of the folks at Leon's, who are friends of the owners.

Looks like Mint Julep Bistro in downtown Palatine has closed. This is rather disappointing to me. I tried going there for dinner last month after purchasing my restaurant.com g/c. When I walked up to their door, it was locked up and empty at dinner time. I later learned from calling them that they were only open for lunch during the summer. Seems odd to me. I drove by more recently, and all the windows have been covered w/paper. Their phone number has been disconnected. I thought they were doing brisk business. They were even featured on Check Please, FWIW. Upon reading more recent reviews on Yelp, looks like the restaurant made a lot of changes to the menu recently.

Apparently this happened some time ago, though I don't recall seeing it here: Old Timer's Restaurant in the Loop has closed. I went there once, after reading about it in Roger Ebert's fine blog post reminiscing about what he used to like eating, and thought it wasn't long for this world. The food was serviceable but dull, food for a Chicago that really no longer exists. Still, I liked that it was there, and I'll miss it.
