To my recollection, the Evanston Lunch Group™, in its 5+ years of existence, has only revisited one restaurant - GNR Deta's Cafe. Seems to be time to revisit another, so we'll be getting together at Phoenix Inn Friday, August 13.

Phoenix Inn suffered a fire well over a year ago, and it recently reopened (Phoenix-like, from the ashes) with a new menu and new chef.
ChgoMike wrote:I was chatting with a friend this past weekend who hails from near Sichuan Province. He tells me that Phoenix Inn has a new Sichuan chef and the specialties are "80% authentic" and much better than pre-fire fare.

Looking forward to seeing the usual suspects and maybe some newbies on the 13th. ELG membership cards will be available.

Usual suspect #1 reporting for duty, sir!

As I posted earlier, new menu offerings include:
tarte tatin wrote:Under seafood, for example, we have sea cucumber offered two ways: with grilled onions and in brown sauce (as well as iron flog legs--hmmmm....). The pork list now offers spicy pork intestine with tofu, pork stomach and scallion, pork intestine with garlic bolt, and spicy and aromatic pig blood--plus bullies pork intestine (???), among others. I'm sure none of these was on the old, pre-fire menu. There are also some lamb dishes I don't remember from the old menu: lamb with pickled pepper, lamb stir-fried with cumin spice....

OK, so who's up for some spicy and aromatic pig blood???

I'm in...however I'm not sure about the aromatic pig blood. I'm also not a big fan of pork intestine. Other than that, looking forward to it.

Actually, we have also revisited Taste of Peru ... We will join you on Friday 13th. It would be fantastic if Evanston had a real Chinese restaurant. Evanston's ethnic restaurants seem to be remarkably generic ... I am not sure Evanston is ready for real Chinese.
Dave Richards of Sweets and Savories is opening a restaurant in Wilmette in September. It will be called Bluette and will be open for lunch. May I suggest we lunch there in October? I don't know exactly when it will open, so it would be premature to schedule it for September.

What's the address of Phoenix Inn?
"To get long" meant to make do, to make well of whatever we had; it was about having a long view, which was endurance, and a long heart, which was hope.

I still need to post pix - but it was good Chinese. Not Sun Wah good, but way better than the pre-fire Phoenix Inn's mushy vegetables in gloppy brown sauce.
