    Hello All,

I am trying to find a good bakery in Skokie IL to make 2 birthday cakes before January 27th. Any suggestions? The closer to the intersection of Skokie Blvd and Main Street the better. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -glb

Unfortunately Vitello's, far and away the best bakery in Skokie, closed a couple of years ago. There are at least two bakeries that I have seen recently on Main Street. One is just west of the Main and Crawford intersection on the north side of the street in the strip malll and the other is a few blocks west on the south side of the street. I have not been to either of these, but at least you can go and check them out if you care to.

It's not quite Skokie and more like Lincolnwood, but we have ordered cakes from Rolf's Patisserie in the past and enjoyed them. I think the last one was a vanilla cake with raspberry filling and a chocolate cream frosting. It's been a couple of years so I'm not sure what it's like now but here's the contact info.

If you can venture over to Evanston, there's the award-winning Bennison's. Although their awards are more for breads than sweets, they do a nice job with cakes.

Just stopped by Rolf's for a fix and they had out huge samples of their banana truffle cake, which is outstanding. I came home with a decorated butter cookie, a red velvet cupcake, a chocolate mint cupcake, and a little piece of flourless cake. I tried the red velvet and it was okay; a little heavy, a little dark, and very flat (size-wise). But decent. The frosting was the best part. Now I have to try to be good til tomorrow but I'll report back.

The one close to Crawford is Val's Bakery (4002 Main 847-568-9725) and I think they're mainly a bread bakery. They might do cakes, but the storefront is always pretty barren. I've never had sweets from there.

The one further west is Zelda's Sweet Shoppe (4113 Main Street) and they're a kosher (CRC) sweet shop/bakery and I don't believe they do birthday cakes other than decorated large cookies. http://www.zeldas.net/ 847.679.0033

I believe Kaufman's recently upgraded bakery team now does decorated birthday cakes. I can't speak for first hand experience with the cakes, but I like the rest of what they do. It's worth checking out.

Nope, just cookies but they also do bars, chocolates and things dipped in chocolate like pretzels.

Sweety Pies has an interesting raspberry pie. The base tastes fresh, but it's a raspberry purée. Above that is something like cheesecake, but topped with a beautiful, deep golden, flaky crust. Plus, the filling is tart. It's quite something.
Tomorrow, if Mr. Pie doesn't get to it first, is chocolate cream.
