The Spot, the venerable burger joint in Kenosha has been discussed a great deal on LTH Forum, but there is no dedicated thread, so allow me to remedy that immediately. I took a drive up to Kenosha to get a few things at Tenuta's, so I decided a stop at The Spot was in order. The Spot has been serving burgers and root beer at the same location since the mid 40's. There was a second, newer location, but I believe it is now closed. That's OK, though because, to quote Dobie Grey, "The original is still the greatest".

The Spot is open until at least 3am (later on weekends) and still features friendly, efficient car hops. I ordered a cheeseburger, large (housemade) root beer and onion rings. The food arrived quickly, but not so quickly as to suggest anything was pre made, and was delivered with a smile.

The cheeseburger is a perfect example of what has come to be known around here as a 30's style burger, with crisp edges and nicely melted cheese. The root beer is not overly sweet and was very refreshing on the hot summer day I was there. The onion rings are really something special. They're obviously breaded in house and expertly fried.

From my Northwest side home, it took me no longer to drive to The Spot than it would to drive to That's-A-Burger on the south side, opening up many opportunities for a revisit, which will happen sooner rather than later.

I remember when I would drive by this place in the early Sunday morning on my way to Jack Cozy Cafe down the street during my weekly Woodmans runs for groceries, wanting to check it out.

When I finally moved to Kenosha, I was able to give The Spot a try. Everything stevez said was correct. They even make a decent chili dog with thier own chili recipe, if I remember correctly. Even though Im not a beans-in-my-chili sort of person, it was pretty tasty.

They also make a great orange soda and you can get both in gallon sizes too. Its a little bit more of a cost then your store bought stuff but it is worth the money.

I decided to do something I used to do all the time, but sadly in these tough economic times I haven't been able to do much, and that was go for a ride with my girlfriend to Wisconsin on a summer Saturday afternoon. We took Sheridan Rd all the way up there, which took a bit longer than I expected. I wanted to finally try The Spot in Kenosha, as you guys have posted about it a bunch of times.

I had a double hamburger, fries, and onion rings. The burger was excellent, just as I was hoping and expecting it to be. If you are a fan of this style, you won't be disappointed. The fries were bland and not worth getting. The onion rings looked very much like Portillo's onion rings (which I love) and they were just about the same taste and texture, so I was happy with them. I asked for them well done and they were great. My girlfriend had a hot dog, which she said was fair. She did like the root beer.

I have to say I don't mind sitting in the car eating, but only when it's a nice day. When it's really hot and muggy out, I don't like it.

After The Spot, we went to Mars Cheese Castle for some things, got some custard at Culver's (I didn't know where to go for a local place!), but the Culver's was superb and then we went home. If we had more time, we would have gone to Racine, hung out by the lake and hit Wells Brothers. Next time! :)

Steve, on your next outing to The Spot, head east on 75th Street to the end and enjoy your lunch with a lake view from your car. The Spot also offers an excellent chocolate malt. Brossman's Meats in Racine is the supplier of The Spot's burger meat.

If you want some excellent custard you can take a drive up to Burlington and check out Adrian's which is a family owned business that has been in Burlington for years. The custard is exceptionally rich and creamy and, in my opinion, the best around. It's a bit of a ride from Kenosha, but do-able.

The other option is to just go to Burlington and have a great burger at Fred's Parkview and then hit Adrian's. There is a nice park in town with a lake near Adrian's where you can sit and relax while enjoying your custard.

Thanks! :) Now this is what this board is all about. I had Fred's on my radar after reading about it here, and to also have a custard place with it is great. I actually was thinking of doing something at Lake Geneva (or near it) so this is perfect.
