I've recently returned from 5 years of school in Milwaukee. My shiny new engineering degree hasn't yet yielded the riches I was promised and I'm back at home with my generous folks in Park Ridge.

Before that (1986), it was Rogers Park.

Yes. I'd be interested in what was your favorite chow at or near where you live.

So, I would characterize my residences as follows:

    Hamburger King
    Rincon Cubano
Eggy Meatball Place (New Hong Kong Cafe)
Tie between Kenny's Ribs (occasional decent if newly cooked and ordered without sauce) and Serrielli's Grocery (very interesting not really 'cause of its food).

Bleh. Highlights were Corner Bakery and West Egg Cafe.
    Feb. '98 -- Ravenswood & Roscoe
Single most important discovery in my 7 1/2 years here: Paulina Meat Market
    May '99 -- Paulina & Wilson
Lots of places. Favorite? Eh. The long-gone Mimi's Deli, I suppose, and Taste of Heaven. JoAnne & Sons for ice cream and occasionally for breakfasts, I guess, although more because it was a block away than that it was a great diner -- just a good one. Now that I think of it, I usually went around J&S to LeSabre for its very fine breakfast special.
    May '03 -- Winnemac & Hermitage
Not much of a change from the last. On the rare weekend mornings I ran out of something, Pauline's replaced the other two diners, I guess.
    Sep. '04 -- Michigan & South, Evanston
Bleh again. At least Campagnola is kind of near, certainly a destination, but equally certainly not the kind of neighborhood joint you're thinking of. Lucky Platter is OK.
ASAP -- back into the city

Unfortunately, all my former haunts offer few memories of good local food. I have always wandered far & wide for that.

But here are my Chicago area residences. In the interest of "brevity", anything that is over 3 years, I will refer to as a long time.

Highland Park - a long time
    Cicero - 6 months
    Uptown (Foster & Sheridan) - 3 years
    Oak Park - 1 year
Schaumburg (the true nadir of my Chicago existence) - a long time
    LaGrange - 3 years
Naperville - a very long time

It should be noted that somewhere in there I attended school for the better part of 4 years at 31st and State, and spent a fair amount of time in Beverly and points south, so I developed some affinity for the south side. With the exception of Cicero where I was never made to feel even slightly welcome back in the 70's (let's just say I was a hippy just back from California, and they weren't) and the barren flats of Schaumburg, each place has had its charms. Given my druthers, I would go back to Uptown in a flash, though. Offers a lot, including proximity to the Lake, cultural diversity, great food, my best friend very nearby, and of course easy access to frequent LTH dinners.

    Just my opinion, though.

Maybe it is time to move.

Some of the best food years of my youth were in the late 70s to early 80s, when I was in and out of a number of half-way houses on the northside:

    2829 N. Lakeview: a short crawl to Wiener’s Circle
1153 N. Dearborn: Right across from the old Biggs
206 Arlington: Within spitting distance of France’s Foods
3054 N. Southport: Around the corner from the Golden Nugget, open 24 hours

    Rev Andy:
You lived a spittin' distance from me when you were at Lincoln & California. You must remember:

    Burt's (Foster & California)
    Ron's Open Oven (Lincoln Ave.)
    Pampered Pup (Lincoln & Berwyn)
    Henry's (Foster & Western)
    Berwyn Fisheries (Lincoln & Berwyn)
    Beefy 19 (Western & Berwyn )

What do you remember from the old 'hood?

Cito, I went to Jamieson Grammar School and Mather High. Those could be your alma mater also, though a little later. I certainly remember the places you mentioned. My favorite hot dog at the time was at Lerner's, on Kedzie, near Bryn Mawr. After they closed I enjoyed the Hot Dog Pit(I think that's the name) on Foster and Kedzie with their char grilled dogs. I loved the sodas and sundaes at Loree's on Foster west of Kedzie. Otto's Pizzeria had good greasy pizza on Peterson just east of California. Probably my all time favorite was getting ribs every Sunday from Miller's on Western. Also a steak and special salad from the Black Angus, also on Western(that closed, and Chris Carson opened up Carson's Ribs with their sour cream and anchovy dressing).
