Anyone have anything up in this area? I've stopped at the Pepper Mill in Mt. Morris for their "Chicken Jockey" (big chicken fingers, worth the stop), but aside from that, haven't really found anything and we often end up eating at the Lake Carroll Clubhoouse. Any ideas in the surrounding towns, such as Shannon, Mt. Carroll, Oregon? Just looking for a good under the radar joint.

I've heard that Sieverts is "OK".

I'm not surprised by the lack of response, given that I've asked many others up there about surrounding places.

Surprisingly, we stopped at the Shell station in Lanark, and they had fried chicken, chicken fingers, onion rings, cheese sticks, jalapeno poppers battered fried potatoes and a few other fried foods. The chicken fingers were clearly homemade and that was confimed upon asking. They were in a beer batter and they were outstanding. The potatoes were good as well. The o-rings and chicken looked to be homemade also, and the cheese sticks were plump and didn't look to be frozen. We only had the fingers and the potatoes, and they were better than the broasted chicken that we picked up at the local grocery store down the street. Gas at 2.69 didn't hurt either.

So far, this is the premier food spot near Lake Carroll

Sounds like chicken fingers are the order of choice out there. Have you met Chicken George at Candlelight Inn in Sterling?

If you're taking I-88 it's only a slight detour (+10 miles) on the way to Lake Carroll. In the world of chicken fingers—a world I usually don't inhabit—they're actually pretty good. Can't say I care much for Jan's sauce though.

there is a bar right downtown Shannon--don't remember the name but everytime we go to the Illinois State BBQ contest we eat Friday lunch there--handmade burgers cooked well---cold beer too!
