Crapola. So did I; I thought they were a significant improvement over the original, and got my folks addicted to the garlic pork medallions and black bean soup.

This is especially abrupt since a close friend just had a date there last week, and waved to a server I know (guiltily) through the window while I sent to the adjacent Jerk Grill several days ago.

Cafe Cubano down the street has some work to do to earn my trust.

Ok, this is interesting re: Cafe Laguardia (West)

The former Brown Sack location on Armitage ~ 3700 west has morphed into something called Club Laguardia. I wondered if it was from the same owners of the Cafe Laguardia in Bucktown - I always knew there was a suburban outpost, as well.

Hmmm, from their Facebook page, I think this might be the case -

Cafe Laguardia From Jorge at Cafe Laguardia West: "To all of my family & friends, I want to tell you all that after 6 wonderful years meeting and greeting the most beautiful people in Chicago, my family and I decided to close Cafe Laguardia West and concentrate on our new venture."

It looks cute from what I can tell, they have taken the paper off the windows. Added a glass block wall in front of the door, creating a little entryway. From the smaller size and area, perhaps this will be a quicker service, more affordable option.

A sign in the window of the old O'Fame location at Western and Bertau indicates that Armand's Pizza is coming soon . . . somewhat interesting after reading this post.

Didn't see this mentioned yet ... was walking home down N Lincoln tonight and noticed Aquitane which is apparently a new gastropub. Looked pretty as a room ... menu looked simple but tasty. I'm hoping it's good - we could use some good, walk to spots like this (and like Gemini Bistro as well).

Villa Park's Tierra Grill is no more. In its place is the new Omelette Grill. I have not yet eaten here and it is open only until 4 pm.

The Tierra Grill sign is still up but an "Omelette Grill" banner is stretched across the lawn.

That's too bad - it was a good place, especially when they started out. I just moved out of that neighborhood, but had noticed that it was generally pretty empty for quite some time now... I'd go in for the 1/4 chicken and they wouldn't have it, things like that. Still quality food, but inconsistencies in service and availability had made me stop going there...

Andy's Frozen Custard will open in the loop a week from today--September 8th. It's in Block 37 at the pedway level. I've seen the signs all summer and noticed renovations underway yesterday. Today I stopped and spoke to the man working inside, who turns out to be the manager, and he's the source for the opening date. I can't wait to try that key lime concrete that was the best thing Mikey has eaten lately.

He gave me a coupon for a free sundae. I see one in Oak Lawn is "coming soon."

Not sure if it's been posted here or in the Kabul House thread, but the Elk Grove Village location is "temporarily closed"- discovered that tonight when we tried to go for dinner. Are there still possibilities of another location in Skokie, on Oakton, I think?

Also, the space formerly occupied by Bennigan's in Lake Zurich on Rand Rd. now has a sign that says "Beelow's Steakhouse Opening Soon"...the font and overall style of the sign looked like a cartoon-y kids version of a steakhouse....this does not fill me with hope.

Regardless of its decor and strip-mall feel, this was the burger joint of my youth, and I have never been so moved by a restaurant closure. It was closer to us, and we'd frequently run into neighbors and friends there. For me, then, what it may have lacked in classic burger joint feel, it made up for with bona fide character. I will spill one for ol' Top Notch tonight.

Parents didn't stop to read the cardboard sign in the door, so I can't ascribe a reason, or the possibility of a return, but still. At least the other remains...

You know they're always closed on Sunday, and could very well be closed for Labor Day weekend, right?

This was a Saturday at around 5 pm--shortly before the timestamp on my post. The sign on 95th street says, "Thanks for a wonderful 22 years in Oak Lawn." There was a handwritten sign on the door that said "Sorry, closed"--I asked them for clarification on this. My parents also seemed to think the fixtures had been removed, but didn't get out of the car. It would be quite odd for them to be closed on the Saturday before Labor Day. Also, they had recently been open on Sundays for shortened hours.

That's a shame, I like that place. They just had a Groupon until the end of May. I guess we should use that ASAP.

By way of confirmation, I took a spin up by Top Notch West. Note how the Sunday hours had been scratched out--it normally said closed, but there was a sign inside the restaurant saying they had been open on Sundays recently. Couldn't get a good pic of that, though. Anyhow, please obey the sign and patronize the other location.

The one in Evanston is turning out some pretty good frozen custard. For my money, it's the best version in the area (yes, that includes Scooter's).

I didnt schlep all the way up to Evanston, but tried the Andy's in Bolingbrook on Sunday, really nice, and they have Sprecher rootbeer.

I didn't schlep all the way up to Evanston, but tried the Andy's in Bolingbrook on Sunday, really nice, and they have Sprecher rootbeer.

I also was at the Andy's in Bolingbrook recently and thought it was more sugary and less creamy than Custer's.

The root beer was very good. Sprecher's on tap!

I spent many evenings at Joey's and attended many events there when I was involved with Theatre Building Chicago. While it's never a good thing when a restaurant closes, this is hardly surprising. In fact, it's hard to see how they lasted as long as they did with such consistently poor service and an unimaginative menu that barely changed for years.
