I do not understand the appeal of this place. I've tried it three or four times when we've been traveling out west, and maybe my expectations were too high or something, but I didn't feel like it was any better than, say, Wendy's or whatever.

I suppose the car hop thing has it's appeal. For about five minutes. But after eating their crappy burgers, freezer-to-fryer sides, and plasticine shakes, the carhop thing just isn't interesting enough to bring me back.

The appeal for me was being subjected to their TV commercials over a long period of time despite the fact their were none even remotely close to me. Once they opened in reasonable proximity to me and I tried them,I lost interest quickly.

Maiden trip to Sonic today while in Peoria on business. Had the chicken club, tots and iced tea. The tea was O.K, whereas I can't remember the last time I ate as large a greasy mess as the sandwich and spuds. Now I know why my Arizona-living daughter kept telling me that she only goes there for the beverage "happy hour".

Just to add my two cents - went twice (actually went a third time long ago in Independence Kansas, but that does not count) to the Oswego location. First time was some sort of chicken strip special with tater tots and sweet tea, second time was a burger. I suppose I did not order well, but nothing impressed me enough to go back, not even the sweet tea.

I see the charm of the whole package, but not enough to go eat there again.

This Palatine location is open now. Whenever we drive by this Sonic, my kids ask me if we can go there. I am trying to avoid going there.

My kids think that the food is delicious. If I went back, I would probably just try a shake.

has anyone tried their sweet onion rings? by far the weirdest onion ring i've ever ate. i thought they mistakenly dropped the rings in some kind of pancake batter but i guess they're supposed to be sweet... so strange.

Ugh - I never need to return to Sonic. Went for the first time ever to a location just beyond the Aurora outlet mall. Our cheeseburgers tasted just like a McDonald's burger -- and I don't mean this in a good way -- and let's just say that Sonic can't even lay claim to good fries. The fries had no flavor or seasoning, whatsoever, and I generally was left with an "Is Oz behind the curtain in that odd brick-and-mortar thing they call a building?" feeling. Not sure if all Sonics don't have a lobby or interior seating, but I found the whole thing very odd and not very tasty. I suppose the whole quasi-car hop set-up would have been more appealing if the food had been at all special or good, but alas, it really was more like fuel....

And to boot, the make-your-own paper Shamu that comes with the child's meal is particularly difficult to put together! Argh! ; )

My Bride and I stopped at the location at Grand west of Mannheim.

Knowing most of the offerings were sub par we decided to give the hot dogs a try.

Not too bad for fast food! Good flavor and snap. I had the footlong Coney and she the Chicago. The Coney had beanless chili as it should. We did stop at lunch time so everything was fresh.

I still think the cherry limeade is too sweet but when I squeezed the juice out of the lime wedges (2) it did add some tart.

Not a substitute for any of the area hot dog stands but if on the road...

I've been to the Sonic on Grand twice. The big double cheeseburger was okay on one visit. The foot long coney dog was pretty good on the second visit. Sides nothing to brag about. What I did enjoy, and would go back for is the Limeade. Very tasty, with lime wedges you can squeeze for added flavor.

Add me to the list of naysayers. I read this thread today to try to make some informed choices for my first visit (to the Palatine one), but . . .

Popcorn chicken: heavy breading, dry meat
Onion rings: heavy breading, fry oil needed changing
Junior's corn dog: He handed it over to me; I didn't like it either
Tater tots: I thought they were greasy. He of the high grease tolerance liked them.
Watermelon cream slush: Good, not great
    Cherry limeade slush: Very good
Verdict: If you are thirsty, and you are near a Sonic, stop for one of their juice drinks.
If you are hungry, and you are near a Sonic, don't stop.

Sonic Drive-In could be serving its famous burgers, hot dogs and cherry limeades in Uptown later this year, marking the Oklahoma City-based fast-food chain's entry into Chicago.

I find that I can craft a decent $4 fast food breakfast (compared to McDonald's or similar chains) by getting a grilled cheese sandwich with double extra bacon (so 4 strips), and a (half-price before 11a) large diet cherry limeade.

Bacon is the only meat, however, that I eat at Sonic.

Love the story . . . the neighbors are concerned about music . . . HA! At Wilson/Sheridan, there's a lot more to be concerned about than loud music . . . I just hope they get this area under control and that Sonic makes it there . . . so close to me.
