Sorry for the absence. I have been out of town, in weddings, moving, etc this month, but I am glad to be back. I figured I would choose a later weekend to give people time to prepare. Does Saturday, Sept. 25th work for people? I'm flexible on that weekend. Just let me know!

We'll cap lunch at 10 (preference given to exchange participants)

    Lunch:

    Exchange:

    As requested...

    The Brown Sack
    3581 West Belden Avenue
    Chicago, IL 60647

    http://www.thebrownsack.com

Number in the group: We will cap attendance at each gathering at 11 so that participants are never making more than 10 servings of anything. Couples will be counted as one serving.

The food: There are great omnivore dinner and dessert exchanges that happen monthly. This is for people interested in doing a vegetarian dinner exchange (without meat or meat stock etc, but can include eggs and dairy). We make 5-10 servings of one dish, and bring back 5-10 different dishes. Participants bring one pre-portioned serving of their food for everyone who has RSVP’d to come that month. A serving is whatever you think it is for your food item. The priority will be for entrees, soups, salad, stews, legumes, grains, etc. There's a preference for healthy dishes.

The containers/delivery system: Everyone in the group should use the Gladware 3 1/8 cup plastic containers (it’s the approximately 7” x 7” square with the pop-up lid). You’ll portion your food into those containers to bring and hand out at the gathering. You can freeze them or not depending on your schedule and when you make your food. There is no need to fill the container, just put in whatever is a serving to you. If you use something else to deliver your food that month (Ziploc bags, plastic wrap, etc.) you should also return the empty containers from the last round so that everyone always has a stash of these containers for the exchange and doesn’t have to run out and buy more. Also, let's give it a whirl & include your user name & the name of your dish on the lid of the container. Sometimes, when we freeze a dish for later we just have no idea what is inside & who to ask for the recipe & we are too embarassed to ask out loud on the board.

    The process:

Each of us will take turns being the organizer each month. Each time we meet, someone will offer to organize the next month’s gathering.

Approximately two weeks before the next gathering, the organizer will post a new thread to the events page announcing the date and the location for that month and asking for RSVP’s.

Participants will need to RSVP their attendance by one week before the monthly gathering. They will then need to post what they are bringing by three days before the gathering. This is to help make sure we get some balance in the food so that we’re not all bringing something that has to be eaten in the next 2-3 days; that there’s a balance of stuff that can be frozen for later, or eaten sooner.

The organizer will monitor the thread to see what people are bringing. The organizer will also make reservations for the group at the restaurant where we will be gathering. People can choose to stay for the meal or just come and exchange food and leave. Just let the organizer know so they can get an accurate count for the reservation. Other LTHers are welcome to join us for the meal, even if they are not bringing food to exchange.

I thought we were doing Saturday the 18th for some reason. I can do that date. I'm not here the last weekend in September.

I'm out. Wedding on the 19th.

jami wrote:Putting it off until September would be fine with me. Does the 3rd Saturday in September work better for everyone else?

I can still organize that one. It might not be at Z&H as I will live in Logan Square at that time.

Okay, now at least I know I'm not losing it. The 3rd Saturday in September is indeed the date that I recalled.

At this point I can do all three times, but I'm on elderly relative duty and will confirm when we select a date and get a bit closer.

I am out of town the weekend of the 18th/19th and also not available on the 26th. If the exchange happens to be the 25th, count me in...otherwise, I will see everyone in October.

I'm waiting for someone to tip the scale. I can't choose between Indianbadger and pairs4life!
All three dates work for me too.

Tomorrow I will do a very sophisticated eeny-meeny miny mo if I don't hear from anyone else.

So I think it makes more sense now to do Sunday, September 26th 11:30 am because this weekend is nearly upon us. Who can make it to that one?

No milkshake at the Brown Sack because it isn't open on Sundays.

I'm still scheduled to be out of town so I can't wait to hear about the food and the location you pick.

The weekend approacheth and I have not grocery shopped. I selfishly propose October 9, because it sounds like everyone is booked next weekend and I'm out of town October 2/3.

Brown Sack or Handlebar sounds lovely. Would 10/9 work as a date? To tempt you all, I'll make a early proclamation that I'll bring buttermilk summer squash soup with brown butter and roasted cumin (if there is any summer squash left), because I'm obsessed with the recipe and you should be too.

If you decide on the first weekend in October, that's fine too and I'll see you in November.

i join in the selfishness and am also out of town the weekend of oct 2/3 but am definitely in if it is the 9th.

is your squash soup recipe from love soup? i bought the book upon your recommendation in the spring, but this summer has been so insane that i have barely cracked it let alone cooked from it. i must try some recipes immediately upon my return from CA.

Can I counter with the weekend of the 22nd of October ? The Canning Exchange is on October 23d, but I can at least participate in the exchange if it's that weekend.

I'm gone the 2nd and 3rd weekends in October, or I could propose we aim for the last weekend in the month so everyone knows when to expect it.

I hesitate to weigh in, since my new schedule is kicking my butt... I think I can do any of these dates for lunch, but I'm not sure about cooking. Possibly good weekends for cooking are 10/9-10 and 10/30-31. But don't worry so much about my cooking dates, I can sit out the exchange part of the event.
"To get long" meant to make do, to make well of whatever we had; it was about having a long view, which was endurance, and a long heart, which was hope.
