On a whim we trekked out to Edison Park and ate at Don Juan's, hadn't been there in years. Mrs. Concannon welcomed us warmly, we started going there maybe twenty years ago but haven't been in years. Patricio has a new Italian place in Orland Park, Ottimo; his mother said that after ten years working for Francesca's and six long visits to Italy he decided to open an Italian place. We were early, around four thirty, there was only one other table. Nothing has apparently changed, the menu had some updates (tacos al pastor, a tasting menu) but went with some old faves, tampiquena for Mrs. Trpt and the mole con pollo for me. The smoky chipotle salsa and freshly made chips were a pleasure as always. The flank steak tampiquena was perfectly done, and came with a gigantic cheese chile relleno and guacamole. The mole was stellar, smoky, dense and slightly sweet with cinnamon notes, and the two grilled chicken breasts were grilled perfectly, seared on the outside but moist and succulent.
There were a few services glitches, an inattentive and absent minded waiter, though the runners and bus boys were terrific. We had churros for dessert, another new twist and they were warm, fresh and delicious, reminding me of the stall in the zocalo in Xalapa. $62 with tax and tip and two drinks, not bad. It made us both wonder why it's been so long. When Don Juan debuted there was only Frontera in the upscale Mexican market, and since then the field has exploded. It's a little out of the way in the far reaches of Edison Park, the pseudopod extension of Chicago that reaches out past Harlem surrounding NW highway bordering Park Ridge. But it has a nice take on traditional Mexican cuisine and if one is in the neighborhood it's worth a stop. They do a good local business, by the time we left at six there was a line waiting.
