I decided to go back to the beginning of this thread to see just how true that assertion was. I maintain that wine gets most of the play in conjunction with food, both at home and out on the town.

However, when I went back to the beginning to check just how things shaped up, and found its origins in this thread. Looks like this one just sorta took over...

I do hope that folks will still feel free to post about their wine experiences here, too, if they so desire.

Yesterday the last of the Sam Adams Noble Pils. And Booker shooters.

New Glarus Unplugged Enigma. Another gem in the crown jewels of New Glarus. Approachable, but interesting. Tart with wild yeast and cherries, but in a really balanced way. Good oak character, but less so than I've encountered with other oaked beers. A nice smokiness and a bit of funk, combined with 5.5 ABV, yields a beer that ought to appeal to a nice variety of people. If it weren't so precious, I'd use this as a good foray into sours and fruit beers for the less beer-inclined.

Was introduced to WhistlePig last night. 100% rye whiskey, 100 proof, aged 10 years. Nowhere near as boozy as the 100 proof would have you think, spicy with a nice sweet-vanilla/butterscotch finish. Rather pricey @ $70/btl but quite nice.

It's good, but when I got my bottles a month or so ago I didn't think it was a good as it was when I had it at WhiskyFest.

I almost opted for the WhistlePig today when I stopped in at Binny's in Highland Park. But after doing my best to recall the haze that was WhiskeyFest, I bought a bottle of High West Rocky Mountain 16-year Rye. It was $14 more than the WhistlePig but I remember liking it a lot more. I hope I'm remembering it right.

Working through my post-Great Taste haul of New Glarus: Dancing Man wheat. Very drinkable, but a bit boozy. Overall a balanced, true-to-style home run--exactly what I expect from Mr. Carey and company.

I love this time of year - still officially "summer" but the Fall beers are all coming in.

Ayinger Oktoberfest-Marzen. Delicious. Hard to get this IPA-loving hophead over to the lager side but this beer does it in spades. On draft just makes it even better.

New Glarus Staghorn Octoberfest. Is there *anything* New Glarus makes that isn't delicious? (That's a rhetorical question, btw). My only complaint about New Glarus is that I can't buy it here! Fortunately friends run up that way frequently enough that I can still get supplied, albeit too infrequently for my tastes.

St Bernardus Abt 12. Not a "Fall" beer, per se, but this is really hitting the spot with some cooler evening temps. Aw, who am I kidding, I'm inside - what difference does the temp make? Besides, after a couple of these you really don't care what the temperature is. Hard to believe the high alcohol content in this beer as the taste is so rich and smooth. Apologies for the crappy photo but the width of the tap handle required it to be offset. I'll try and get a better photo and update back here.

I made a pilgrimate to New Glarus after Great Taste of the Midwest...still working through my stock. Also, Map Room often has St Bernardus on tap.

Also, just finished a Dogfish Head Olde School. Not bad, but a bit sweet, not bitter enough, and not as good as their other high-ABV beers.

The ABT 12 is currently on tap at the Binny's South Loop Tasting Room. It's not your traditional bar but it has a great selection not only of beers but wines and spirits as well and a great staff. Limited hours - bar doesn't open until 3 on most weekdays except Fridays at noon, and closes at 9 with last call at 8:30. Saturday opens at noon, closes at 9, Sunday noon to 6.

Just added to the draft list in the last day is the Daisy Cutter. Just deleted (and I did my part), sadly, is the Ayinger Oktoberfest-Marzen. Watched the last pour today.

Doh! Edited to add location info:

Currently on tap at the Map Room (1949 N Hoyne at Armitage).

They also have Spaten Oktoberfest and I believe the Ayinger Fest beer went on late last night.

If that was your first gueuze, well...you've certainly set the bar high.

Agreed on the brett, too. Something about the usual expected bitterness in beer that makes funk acceptable.

Had my first gueuze at La Mort Subite in Brussels...talk about setting the bar high. Really enjoy the style, there's a very wide range of sourness and funk between labels. Haven't tried the Cantillon...how does it compare to, say, the Girardin?

I wish I could compare those two side-by-side :( I'm no authority on gueuze, sadly. I'll try and remedy that soon. I'm deciding on whether to crack open my New Glarus gueuze, or to give it a little aging time. I trust NG with funk.

Just finished my first pour of Sticky Fat from Half Acre. It's interesting...I read a review describing it as an over-hopped Dry Irish Stout. Not a bad way of putting it, but I'm more enthusiastic about that combo than the reviewer was. It looks and feels like Guinness off a nitro-tap, but I feel like I just chewed up and swallowed a whole Cascade hop cone.
