I was driving south on Waukegan road in Glenview just north of Lake when my eye caught a sign that said "Good BBQ".

I did a double take as "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man." - Lucky Ned Pepper

I pulled into Carillion Square Shopping Center and there tucked into the left hand corner next to the Mexican restraint is "Rail Good BBQ".

I jumped out of the truck leaving my bride to fend for herself, like any good BBQ nut.

I walked to the place which was well lit and clean, but don’t hold that against it yet.

I ask to see the smoker and the counter man leads me into the kitchen where I get to stare at a silver metal box spewing wood smoke into the vent hood.

Being on my way home to eat dinner made by my daughter I didn’t order or sample anything.

On my way out of the door the counter man tells me that this weekend there is an all you can eat special.

So I will be trying mighty hard this weekend to add the forty pounds I have lost since January trying to get my money’s worth.

The first thing I thought of when I saw your post was Victoria's Station.

The place looks rail good though!

I had lunch here today. In brief skip it. I ordered the half slab of baby back ribs and cornbread. Now on the menu they serve St. Louis Cut with Rib tips on the side. What I got for baby backs was a cut down spare rib. The ribs came out with a black lacquer finish that completely obscured whatever rub was used. Honestly I could not taste any rub. The corn bread was doughy with an occasional withered kernel of corn. I order the bread pudding with bourbon sauce for desert. The bread pudding was a thin cold square with a couple of raisins with a caramel flavored sauce that I could not taste any bourbon flavor. I was given a sample of the pulled pork and brisket as well. Both were tender but lack any discernable smoke ring and damn little bark. The only flavor I could pick up was salt. There was one sauce in a squeeze bottle. It was bland tending toward sweet. I spoke with the guy cooking the food; he claimed to have opened a Mexican and a separate Italian restaurant previously to this place. He only inspiration for BBQ was that someone else had approached him to cook for this place. He said they use a mixture of cherry and mesquite wood for the smoking.

I was headed to Trader Joe's in Glenview and hadn't had lunch, so I gave Rail Good BBQ a try today. Contrary to previous reports, what I got was really pretty good. I had the pulled pork, and it was moist and tasty with a decent bit of bark in there. The waitress said they use all oak in the smoker, and it's in log form.

It came with a non-traditional but good cole slaw (oil-and-vinegar dressing with prominent cilantro) and decent but unremarkable beans.

(I was there at what should have been lunch rush, but I was the only customer the whole time I was there. Perhaps they have more of a dinner crowd, or perhaps they just don't have much of a crowd period, I don't know.)

I wouldn't put it up against the best barbecue in LTHland, but it's a decent option in that neck of the woods.
