Any one have any rec's for a lunch spot on the road to Galena, IL? I'm thinking Pecatonica or Freeport, IL or somewhere. Got to be near the road and not too far away. Any advice would be appreciated.

My parents live in Freeport and say Cannova's has the best food in town. Respectable pizza and Italian dishes with large portions. I have not dined there in a few years, so I cannot personally offer a current opinion.

It is a bit of a dead zone, unfortunately. We usually stop at the Culver's in Winnebago, literally just off Hwy 20. When in Galena, we've really enjoyed One Eleven Main.

Thanks. It is kind of a dead zone. I'll survive. Do love Culvers but we have one here. Was looking more for the homecooking kind of spot.

That looks good. Unfortunately my travelling companion does not like pizza or garlic. Can you imagine????

Been a few years, but I always liked stopping at Ridott's Corner for a nice greasy burger. Meets the criteria of being right on Highway 20 between Freeport and Pecatonica.

Ridott Corners' burger is huge, cheap and not bad. One of the biggest $4 burgers I've seen. Mrs Mike's potato chips ("Fresh as a Daisy") are the preferred accompaniment.

Bumping and tweaking this thread to request guidance. My husband and I will be driving from Lincoln Square, Chicago, through Rockford, to Galena during the day on New Year's Eve. We enjoy cooking on vacation, so often stay at places with a kitchen. It is especially fun for us to go to local markets and get what looks best at that moment, even if it's not what we had planned for the locale. This approach led to delicious dinners of rack of goat and bluefoot mushrooms in Quebec City, and pasta carbonara with items purchased at the Borough Market in London. For this two-night trip, we are staying at a villa at Eagle Ridge, and plan to cook NYE dinner there for the two of us. We are looking for interesting places along the way to stop for provisions, preferably no more than 15 or so minutes off the highway, or even within Galena if it will still be open when we arrive. Any special markets, butchers, or fishmongers? I imagine this time of year we are unlikely to find farm stands we might happen upon in summer. If nothing comes to mind, we'll probably hit Boston Fish Market or New England Seafood Company on our way out of town, and pack some pate and n'duja we received in holiday gift baskets. Thank you, and Happy New Year!
