    Hi,

    Hope this isn't "off-topic"....

I do cook a whole lot more than I eat out, so shopping is important to me. And I'm a foodie. I've been here for a while, but sorry, not much lately, but that's changing.

I just moved to Rogers Park from the NW Suburbs. No car anymore. Big life change for me.

I have to figure out what's around here and how to get there. I've been eating too much leftover stuff from the freezer, and that's gotta change. At least the selection has to get added to.

I did check out a grocery store just west of the Morse stop on the Red Line. Not bad, but certainly it's not going to be the only place I shop.

Also, are there any really good ethnic markets around here?

I know this is "shopping and cooking" but if you want to post about must go restaurants that would be nice too.

And maybe one day I'll FINALLY go to one of our get-togethers and meet some of "us" in person, at last. As long as I can get there on public transportation.

    Nancy-

There are many threads out there to help you. Do a simple search for "Rogers Park" and you'll get 32 pages of threads where Rogers Park is mentioned. Pare that down by searching for Topic Titles Only. I wouldn't limit yourself to Rogers Park. You're a short Red Line trip to Argyle Street and the bounties that await there, both for restaurants and markets. Edgewater has a few treats as well with the Ethiopian restaurants on Broadway and a small African market near the Dominick's on Broadway.

Take a look around in some of these other threads and happy exploring!

I figured others would jump in with their suggestions or links to relevant threads. If the OP is car-less, that does make traveling afield more challenging, but certainly not impossible!

True but very fortunately the OP lives in an area of mass transit.

Not just any birds - hens, guinea fowl, and duck in addition to cluckers. And catfish. And my favorite, rabbit. All wailing and waiting for your fresh slaughtered pleasure

The groceries on Clark St. might not look like the best places to shop, but they usually have a fair amount of decent ethnic produce, and often a nice carry-out area. I'm not going to name a specific one because they all have their charms, it's well worth spending a day or so exploring.

However, also good to know - Supermercado Morelia offers grocery delivery.

Ed and Irv's is on Touhy, a great place for meats -

All of this info is findable via the search, but what the heck - let's make it easy on the OP

For groceries, I like Devon Market. It can be an exercise in frustration to have it as your sole source of victuals - every time I go there with a list, they lack something that seems very basic, like salsa - but on the other hand, they have things you wouldn't expect to find in that location. Like top-shelf butter, a nice butcher counter, and a whole aisle full of Euro candies and food. The Bosnian bread is wonderful too, especially hot out of the oven (and slathered with the aforementioned butter).

I also go to La Unica periodically. Most of the time I go there, honestly, I bypass the grocery to head to the cafeteria in the back for a Cuban, but the store is worth checking out too. Some unusual frozen foods and cleaning products (if you need a room freshener that will keep away evil spirits, this is your store).

New Leaf is a store I almost never shop at, but I like that it's there. Cooperatively owned, all-organic, small business. Good sandwiches and coffee, too, which makes it a nice stop to or from the Loyola el.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the wonderful markets on Devon, stretching mostly from Western to California. Most of them are worth at least a quick look, but my two favorites are Patel Brothers, with its vast selection of snacks, and Fresh Farms Devon, with its European feel, huge produce section, and comprehensive spice aisle.

    New Leaf

Romanian on Touhy and Clark has what I consider the best salami in Chicago. Buy it med hard and get some egg buns (Queen Esther I believe) from behind the cashier. The frozen kishke is also the definitive version for me. Just throw it in the oven with a chicken that you roast.

And then there's Deta's on Ridge just S of Howard.

Thanks a lot for the replies and feel free to keep them coming.

I did do a Rogers Park search, but this is sure a lot nicer to look through!!
