The mild disappointment I felt when the quirky Paradise Sushi/ Sauna closed went away when I tasted the fiery, smoky red salsa at Tortilla de Oro restaurant. One of a trio of tasty, smooth salsa purees that also included tomatillo/ jalapeno and habanero/ crema, the arbol/ chipotle combo was easily my favorite. It alone makes Tortilla de Oro a most welcome addition to the neighborhood, and the well-made chilaquiles con perfectly fried, over-easy huevos should add to what I hope will be a positive reception from the area.

Holy mole, I have to get out more! Didn't know that Paradise had closed or that this place had opened up. I'll miss Paradise but if this place is half as good as the pictures indicate I'll be happy to have this walking-distance-from-the-house addition to the neighborhood.

Just to clarify, Paradise Sauna is still open.

I am curious about the Korean bar to its immediate east.

J Story? I've tried at least a half dozen times to see what it is, but the door's always locked and there's nothing visible from the street. Didn't think the place existed in any form other than a sign. Will have to try harder.

Feeling a bit under the weather and on our for dinner, my seven month old and I went to Tortilla de Oro for a big bowl of pozole for me, and some mashed up avocado for her. Tortilla de Oro serves menudo and pozole 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, which I expect to come in handy this winter. This was a superb bowl of pozole, with a deep, rich pig flavor to the broth and tender, fatty chunks of delicious head meat. The accompaniments were nothing special and a little extra chile flavor might have been nice, but that warming, gelatinous pig stock was all that was required to make me very happy.

KennyZ: Were the chilaquiles of the verde or rojo variety? And were they served with beans and rice or just solo?

    thanks!

Looking very, very good for me. I prefer a green chile chilaquiles and like them with rice and beans and that egg on top looks cooked to perfection! Thanks so much for the photo and the tip/OP. I will go when I get the chance.

I like a dry style chilaquiles with the egg incorporated, but Kenny's picture is calling my name!

Cafe El Tapatio on Roscoe and Ashland has the same verde version for brunch on the weekends with perfect over easy eggs, black beans and greens with tomatoes, onions and a light vinaigrette--all together a terrific combo--had it yesterday and still thinking about it. Delicious!!

Had the chilaquiles again last weekend, this time with scrambled eggs instead of fried. Maybe I've been sheltered, because I've never had eggs scrambled in this much pork fat. They were light, fluffy and just drenching with deep, porky flavor. Absolutely delicious.

I should also note that I had the chicken with mole a couple of weeks ago. It was a pretty skimpy portion of bony, dry chicken and a nothing-special sauce.

NB: Tortilla de Oro is no longer open 24/7. 9am-midnight are the new posted hours.
