I know they close early in the afternoon but I have driven by in the morning 3 times in the last 2 weeks and all 3 times they were closed. The first time I saw someone inside cleaning but the doors were locked and no customers were inside. The last two times it was all boarded up (like at night) with not a sign of life. While I can live with the Cafe Con Leche at nearby 90 Miles as a substitute, I can NOT find a reasonable fill in for that Egg, Ham & Cheese sandwich. I LOVE that sandwich. And the one at 90 Miles--which adds onions and uses a denser bread--is NOT a good substitute. So is Cafe Marianao closed for good? Closed for remodeling? Anyone suggest a good place to get a similar egg sandwich in the morning?

    Help.

I would be very surprised it it was actually closed, considering it's popularity. I live nearby, I'll see if I can scope it out.

In the meantime, have you tried the Cafe Con Leche and sandwiches at Cafeteria de Pancho around the corner? Their CCL has long been my favorite in Chicago and the food is pretty good (if a bit greasy). There are occasional language barriers, but they have a very friendly and accommodating staff and, on occasion, you will see MLB players hanging out there w/the owner.

I'll try your suggestion and report back. And let me know if you find out anything about Marianao.

I drove by Cafe Marianao today and it's closed up so tight, it looks like they are expecting a hurricane. There were no signs posted or any people around to ask if they know what's going on. I didn't even see any of the usual maroon vans in the area.

I don't think they'll be closed for long.

They're nice people running a good business and they've been serving our coffee - Cafe Carioca - for a long time (so do Cafe Con Leche and Cafeteria Pancho - both excellent).

Meanwhile, for great coffee visit Cafeteria Pancho or Cafe Con Leche - or visit us - online (http://www.expressoshoppe.com) or at the shop (and save a few $$) - 524 N York Rd. in Bensenville (Tuesday and Thursday, 10a-4p).

Maybe they just went on vacation? I too would be surprised if they closed for good with nary a word.

I had the brilliant idea to call the restaurant. I like Cafe Marianao and wanted to get an answer to this question. Unfortunately, there is a message that the number has been disconnected.

If a restaurant or store closes to go on vacation they usually put up a sign ("On vacation. Back on _____"). There is no such note. And there is no sign of "remodeling". As much as it pains me it LOOKS like they just closed down. If anybody finds out something definite, let us all know.

I drove by this morning and it was more of the same--all boarded up, no signs, no sign of life. :)

And, IMO, the phone being disconnected is ominous. :(

    Good news!

I just saw Willie - the owner of Marianao. They will reopen tomorrow (Saturday , October 16).

Have a Cafe Cubano, or their excellent Cafe con Leche - made with our delicious Cafe Carioca - Chicago's best espresso coffee.

And tell him David from Expresso Shoppe sent you (if everyone who reads this mentions me - it's gotta be good for business!).

    Enjoy!
